The all-in 2018 Golden Slipper Stakes odds on the Godolphin-raced Plague Stone have firmed dramatically after a winning Warwick Farm trial win on Thursday.
Trainer James Cummings was thrilled with the early autumn form of the stable’s Lonhro colt who Kerrin McEvoy rode for a runaway five length hit-out win over 807m at The Farm in a sharp 47.10 seconds.
It was the fastest heat over that distance of the morning and proved Plague Stone had come through his spell in fine order.
On debut the youngster finished runner-up to the Gary Portelli-trained filly Secret Lady as the beaten odds-on favourite in Rosehill’s $150,000 Golden Gift (1100m) back in late November.
Secret Lady has had two runs since, most recently finishing fifth to Golden Slipper favourite Sunlight in the $2 million Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) on January 13 at the Gold Coast, and has another start on Saturday at Rosehill in the Group 3 $150,000 Widden Stakes (1100m).
As for Plague Stone, Cummings has his first-up run scheduled for a couple of weeks’ time at Royal Randwick in the $150,000 Pierro Plate (1100m) where the up-and-comer will put his credentials for the Group 1 $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) on the line.
“He’s a very interesting horse, he’s bred to run a mile and 2000 metres but he has a real on switch inside him and when he jumps from the gates he really wants to use his speed,” Cummings told Racing Victoria.
“The more he can learn to conserve his energy the more of a potent force he’s going to be on the racetrack.
“Look for him to be running in the Pierro Plate in a couple of weeks at Randwick, it will be a nice little race over 1100m to kick him off in and should set up a really good foundation for him for the rest of the autumn.”
The Golden Slipper runs at Rosehill Gardens on March 24 and following Thursday’s trial success, Plague Stone has firmed into $13.
The all-in Golden Slipper odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have the aforementioned Sunlight as the $6 favourite ahead of Team Hawkes’ Snitzel filly Estijaab ($9) and the Chris Waller-trained Performer ($9) who runs first-up in this Saturday’s Group 3 $150,000 Canonbury Stakes (1100m).
