A good run fresh in Saturday’s Summer Sprint at Royal Randwick could earn the Jason Coyle-trained Memes a shot at the Expressway Stakes 2018 in tougher company next month.
A winner of five of her 16 starts over a consistent career to date, four-year-old Time Thief mare Memes runs first-up on the weekend in the $100,000 Summer Sprint (1000m).
Getting the apprentice claim from her regular rider Rachel King, she looks a nice lightweight chance in the handicap and is the firming $2.60 favourite in Summer Sprint betting to salute through Ladbrokes.com.au.
It has been 24 weeks since Memes last raced, but she has had two lead-up trials at Warwick Farm for two eye-catching placings to bring her on fitness-wise for her shot at a fourth win from five starts at Randwick.
The Warwick Farm-based Coyle stepped the mare up notably in grade for her last start back in early August of 2017 when she backed-up from a 1000m Randwick win to run in the Group 2 Missile Stakes (1200m) at the same track.
In her only loss there to date, she only managed to finish six lengths back sixth to Invincible Gem on a Soft (6) course.
Coyle is hoping to convinced to give Memes another go at that level with the weight-for-age Group 2 $200,000 Expressway Stakes (1200m) on February 3 at Rosehill Gardens calling should she fly home on Saturday.
“I’m really happy with the way she’s come back into work,” he told Racing NSW.
“Obviously she starts at a different level to last preparation. It’s hard to do the same as she did last prep but now she just has to handle racing at that higher level.
“There is an option to go to the Expressway Stakes and at Warwick Farm a lot of those mares races start at 1200m, so there are a stack of options for her.
“How she resumes and how she races will dictate where we go with her.
“I thought both her trials were good and this preparation we will just have to learn a lot more about her and where she is placed against a higher level of horse.”
Music Magnate (2017) won last year’s Expressway Stakes, which can serve as a lead-up into a race like the Group 2 $500,000 Challenge Stakes (1000m) at Randwick a month later for the better short-distance performers.
