2018 Gosford Cup Field Features Two Past Champions

On Thursday a small but classy Gosford Cup 2018 field will face off in the handicap clash including Destiny’s Kiss and Red Excitement who have won the past two editions of the race respectively.

Due to run as Race 6 at 5:05pm (AEDT) on Thursday afternoon, this summer’s Listed $150,000 Gosford Quarries Gold Cup (2100m) attracted 10 stayers.

Heading the Gosford Cup weights and contesting the event for a fourth time is the Joe Pride-trained veteran nine-year-old Destiny’s Kiss (61kg).

Dual Melbourne Cup winning hoop Corey Brown has the mount fresh off his Magic Millions 3YO Guineas win aboard 2018 Doncaster Mile-bound Pierata in Queensland last Saturday.

Destiny’s Kiss first contested the Gosford Cup in 2014 running third to Midsummer Sun.

He then returned two years later for a 2016 victory before his third behind Red Excitement in the event 12 months ago carrying 59.5kg.

Brown has his first ride on Destiny’s Kiss in the Gosford Cup field, the galloper last seen carting the same hefty weight to a brave third behind Prince Cheri at Randwick on New Year’s Day in the Listed Tattersall’s Club Cup (2400m).

Allocated just a half-kilo less and also chasing multiple wins in the event is the Gerald Ryan-trained Red Excitement (60.5kg), the eight-year-old Excites gelding looking to secure back-to-back Gosford Cup trophies.

Boasting two wins from three starts at the Gosford track, Red Excitement saluted in the event last January carrying 59kg with Adam Hyeroniums aboard for the two length romp home over Sense Of Occasion.

This week Brenton Avdulla is in the saddle after being aboard for the galloper’s three latest summer runs including a lead-up second behind Montauk in the Group 3 Summer Cup (2000m) at Royal Randwick on Boxing Day.

Local Gosford horseman Fred Cowell will look to keep the trophy at home on Thursday with his Casino Prince eight-year-old Mighty Lucky chasing his first win from four runs a the track.

The perennial fourth placegetter has run just out of the money racking up four straight fourth place finishes going back to November.

All of his latest runs have been extremely brave efforts including being beaten just a length by Testashadow in the Group 3 Festival Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on December 2.

Mighty Lucky then finished just three-quarters of a length off Crack Me Up as a $26 roughie in Randwick’s Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m), before a last start fourth when one length away in the Summer Cup.

There are four last start winners in an open edition of the Gosford Gold Cup in 2018 including the aforementioned Summer Cup winner Montauk from the star Sydney stables of Chris Waller.

Jockey Matthew Cahill retains the ride on the More Than Ready five-year-old who ran third in the winter’s Listed Summer Cup (2350m) and third again in early December’s Listed ATC Cup (2000m).

In the Summer Cup from December 26 Montauk carried just 53kg to victory and he rises notably to 57.5kg chasing successive wins this week.

Waller has also accepted for fellow last start winner Hogmanay, the Lonhro five-year-old having saluted on December 30 at Randwick with 59.5kg on his back over 1800m.

Chasing his first victory over further than 1900m, Hogmanay will relish the drop right back to Thursday’s 54kg minimum and Christian Reith is booked for the ride.

Newcastle’s Kris Lees meanwhile has Singing chasing a third win on the trot after the eight-year-old entire saluted in back-to-back Doomben races over 2000m and 2200m respectively in December.

The other last start winner looking to extend their winning summer form is the Lea Selby-trained Evangelist, yet another eight-year-old still showing plenty of zest for racing.

Winner of Gosford’s Picnic Cup (1600m) in mid-December, Evangelist comes off a January 9 victory at Kempsey in the Summer Stayers Handicap (1900m).
