Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Despite a wide gate and last start loss to this afternoon’s favourite, plenty of money is rolling in for early Magic Millions 3YO Guineas 2018 betting market mover Whypeeo ahead of the $2 million Gold Coast feature.
After passing a final vet check and being cleared to line-up in this year’s Restricted Listed Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m), it is the Gregory Hickman-trained Pierata at the top of the odds paying $2.80.
The son of Pierro comes off a last-start Doomben win in the Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1350m) and remains in line for the $500,000 Summer Crown Bonus.
Drawn the rails, Pierata and jockey Corey Brown are tipped as the ones to beat by the bookies, but the punters are going for an upset in the form of local hope Whypeeo.
Twelve months ago Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds and owner Darren Halpin combined to take out the Magic Millions 2YO Classic with I Am Invincible filly Houtzen.
She overcame the outside barrier (16 of 16) for an impressive success that Halpin is hoping either Whypeeo or his other runner I Am Impinge, who made the line-up as the first emergency following the scratching of Arrestar, can emulate this afternoon.
“Both horses come from the same sire of Houtzen, with the same trainer,” the North Queensland-based Halpin told the Cairns Post.
“I think Whypeeo is a great sprinter but I am not sure if I can put him in the same category of Houtzen just yet.
“But he very well could be. He is showing us a lot and is a very exciting horse.”
Jumping from gate 14 with Blake Shinn in the saddle, Whypeeo won the Listed Gold Edition Plate (1200m) defeating Pierata narrowly at Doomben in mid-December.
Things went amiss last time out when he could only manage to run four and a quarter-lengths back eighth in the Vo Rogue when Pierata turned the tables.
Edmonds is taking his chances again in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas however after opting to run Whypeeo against Pierata again instead of running his youngster in the $1 million Magic Millions Snippets (1200m) later on the card.
Stablemate I Am Impinge meanwhile jumps from barrier 10 with Jeff Lloyd riding the $34 outsider whose lead-up run was a Vo Rogue Plate fourth.
Following Pierata in the Magic Millions Classic odds meanwhile is the Kris Lees-trained filly Sasso Corbaro ($4.80), the daughter of All Too Hard after a fourth win on the trot.
Her latest success was at Randwick on December 30 when carrying 58.5kg to a three and a quarter length victory over 1300m.
Whypeeo’s hoop Shinn was on Sasso Corbaro that day, but triple Melbourne Cup winning jockey Damien Oliver comes aboard for this afternoon’s big event where the filly drops right back to just 54kg.
