Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Warwick Farm’s Bjorn Baker is enjoying heading into Saturday’s Magic Millions 3YO Guineas 2018 at the Gold Coast with an under-the-radar chance Goodfella.
Twelve months ago Baker was feeling the pressure ahead of the Restricted Listed $2 million Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (1400m) with his then undefeated colt Winning Rupert the odds-on favourite.
Having won his five lead-up runs including Brisbane’s Group 3 Vo Rogue Plate (1300m), Winning Rupert was also in line to secure the lucrative $500,000 Summer Crown Bonus.
Instead, the beaten favourite finished just under two lengths away fourth behind shock $101 winner Flying Jess and suffered a career-ending injury.
This Queensland Summer Racing Carnival the half-a-million dollar bonus remains in play again and it is there for the Gregory Hickman-trained Pierro colt Pierata to claim on Saturday.
Baker certainly doesn’t envy the pressure of his rival Warwick Farm-based trainer and is more than happy with the chances of his Snitzel colt Goodfella in the race.
“I had Egyptian Symbol run an unlucky third after being held up for a run two years ago and last year Winning Rupert ran fourth,” Baker told Racing Queensland speaking of his luckless Magic Millions Guineas results to date.
“It’s a big race and I know how Greg must be feeling. There’s always pressure on you but it’s a great race to win.
“Invariably the pressure is always on no matter what the race and I think Goodfella will be hard to beat.”
Pierata dominates Magic Millions 3YO Guineas betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.30 and jumps from barrier one with dual Melbourne Cup winning jockey Corey Brown to ride the last start Vo Rogue Plate winner.
The Magic Millions Guineas history books are against the top fancy from the inside alley however with the sole champion from that gate being Tippitaka (2015).
Drawn better than midfield in gate six with Jason Collett coming back on for the ride is Goodfella, a $10 chance in the Magic Millions Guineas odds online.
Goodfella is back at the Gold Coast track for the first time since his brave fourth behind class filly Houtzen in last year’s Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m).
He enjoyed back-to-back Randwick wins last October before things went amiss for him down the Flemington straight during the Melbourne Cup Carnival when Collett rode him to an unplaced 13th in the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m).
This time in Goodfella has had two runs, the first a disappointing eighth behind Whypeeo, an $18 chance on Saturday, in the Listed Gold Edition Plate (1200m) in mid-December.
Back at Doomben last time out on December 30, Goodfella improved getting back out to a more suitable distance and was under three lengths off Pierata as a $21 shot in the Vo Rogue Plate.
“He’s in great order and barrier six is perfect for him,” Baker said.
“He’s won over 1400 metres at Randwick so the distance is ideal.”
