Hot favourite and defending champion Vega Magic has drawn out wide in barrier 14 of 20 in Saturday’s The Goodwood 2018 field at Morphettville Racecourse.
A capacity line-up of autumn sprinters take to the Adelaide track on the weekend in this season’s Group 1 $1 million Darley The Goodwood (1200m) including the Lindsay Park-trained Vega Magic who won the race last year.
The now five-year-old Lope De Vega gelding is out to go back-to-back in The Goodwood for the first time since Musket Belle (1911-12) and is favourite to do so at bookmakers around the country including Ladbrokes.com.au.
Vega Magic won from barrier six of 20 last year during a four straight winning streak, but has more work to do in the title defence in gate 14 this weekend.
Damien Oliver jumps aboard for the first time since August last year and Vega Magic also gives the weight away carrying the 59kg top weight on Saturday.
A first-up specialist with three wins and two seconds from six previous resuming runs, the favourite in The Goodwood betting hasn’t raced since last November but is still tipped as the one to beat this weekend.
The Lindsay Park stable have also accepted for Snitzel four-year-old Thronum, the stallion drawing betting barrier five for his first run since the second in Moonee Valley’s Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) on March 23.
A host of the better fancied rivals for Vega Magic have also suffered wide The Goodwood barriers including the Mick Price-trained Secret Agenda (19) and the Godolphin-raced Viridine (20) with the two outside gates to overcome.
Dwayne Dunn rides Not A Single Doubt mare Secret Agenda who comes off two placings at the track, the latest a second to Shoals in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes (1200m).
She overcame barrier 13 of 17 that day for the second placing and is out to improve on her fourth in The Goodwood last Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival.
Viridine meanwhile is looking to be the first three-year-old The Goodwood winner since the filly Lone Rock (2011), the James Cummings-trained Poet’s Voice colt last seen running just a quarter length third behind I’ll Have A Bit in the Group 2 Euclase Stakes (1200m) at the track and distance on May 5.
John McArdle’s Euclase Stakes winning filly I’ll Have A Bit is also in The Goodwood field on Saturday looking to do the double with barrier three working in her favour.
Other standout The Goodwood horses this season include the Anthony Freedman-trained Sir Rupert Clarke winner from last October Santa Ana Lane, Lloyd Kennewell’s Winterbottom Stakes winning mare Viddora and the Darren Weir-trained Voodoo Lad.
