Front running colt Cliff’s Edge has drawn the rails in the capacity field for the 2018 Group 1 $600,000 Sky Racing 2018 Rosehill Guineas (2000m) at Rosehill on Saturday.
The final field for the Rosehill Guineas is made up of eighteen three-year-olds plus three emergencies with the Victoria Derby winner Ace High to lead the field out onto the track.
Cliff’s Edge has won two of his four starts this campaign and led all of the way last start to win the Group 2 $200,000 Hacer Group Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at The Valley last Friday night.
John Allen takes over the reins from Jamie Mott and the Irish jockey is looking for another win on the Darren Weir trained colt after they combined for a win in the Group 3 $150,000 Ladbrokes Manfred Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 3.
Ace High drew just worst than mid-field at barrier eleven and the David Payne trained colt will appreciate the step up to 2000m in the Rosehill Guineas and will be ridden again by Tye Angland after the pair combined for a last start fourth to Kementari in the Group 1 $1m Mostyn Copper Group Randwick Guineas (1600m) at Randwick on March 10.
Angland and Ace High also teamed up for a win in the Group 1 $500,000 Moet & Chandon Spring Champion Stakes (2000m) at Randwick during the 2017 Spring Carnival and for a win in the Group 1 $1.5m AAMI Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington on the first day of the 2017 Melbourne Cup Carnival.
Trainer Chris Waller accepted with six three-year-olds for the Rosehill Guineas with five making the main field of eighteen while Tangmere is listed as the third emergency.
Waller’s Rosehill Guineas contenders were given a mixed result at the barrier draw with the stable’s best hope, D’Argento with Hugh Bowman aboard, drawing barrier nine but could move in one spot if all the emergencies fail to gain a start.
So You Win (Craig Williams) fared the best of the Waller runners at barrier seven in the original draw, while Tangled (Michael Walker) drew barrier twenty, Kaonic (Zac Purton) drew barrier seventeen, The Lord Mayor (Kerrin McEvoy) drew barrier twelve and Tangmere came up with thirteen.
Cambridge co-trainers Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman will supply a strong New Zealand presence in the Rosehill Guineas with Vin De Dance, Mission Hill and first emergency Mongolian Marshall.
Vin de Dance drew barrier three with Jason Waddell in the saddle again after steering the gelding to victory in the Group 1 NZ$1m NZ Derby (2400m) at Ellerslie in New Zealand on March 3.
Mission Hill finished sixth behind his stablemate in the NZ Derby and drew barrier eight in the Rosehill Guineas field for 2018 with Damian Lane booked to ride.
The Kiwis will also be represented with the Stephen Autridge and Jamie Richards trained Age Of Fire (Jason Collett, barrier fifteen) and Mongolianconqueror (Ope Bosson, barrier twenty-one).
