2018 Mannerism Stakes Field & Betting: Silent Sedition Odds-On

The defending champion Silent Sedition is again tipped as the mare to beat on Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes Day sitting top of the Mannerism Stakes 2018 field and odds at Caulfield Racecourse.

Last Melbourne Autumn Racing Carnival the Andrew Noblet-trained daughter of War Chant won the Group 3 $150,000 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) second-up ahead of three very competitive efforts in elite level.

Twelve months on the now five-year-old is well-supported to win successive editions of the mares’ only race sitting top of the Mannerism Stakes betting markets at $1.95 and firming through Ladbrokes.com.au.

The official Mannerism Stakes field attracted nine final acceptances before the early scratching of the Anthony Freedman-trained Petition (5).

Drawn in gate four with internationally preformed hoop Craig Williams retaining the ride, odds-on favourite Silent Sedition again comes into the clash second-up.

In her campaign kick-off at the Caulfield track a fortnight back she was one and a half-lengths beaten when fifth to Prussian Vixen in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m).

Fitter for the run this weekend she faces a smaller field over a more suitable distance and is out to make history as the event’s first back-to-back winner.

Silent Sedition went on last autumn to finish runner-up when narrowly beaten by Heavens Above in Rosehill’s Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) before her Moonee Valley win in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m).

She was also far from disgraced when fourth behind Foxplay at Royal Randwick during ‘The Championships’ in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) and could be aimed at a number of the same races again this time in.

Following Silent Sedition in the Mannerism Stakes odds at $4.40 is the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Hinchinbrook mare Flippant.

The five-year-old chases her first win since November of 2016, but was competitive last time out running just a short half-head second in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes that could prove the form race to follow into Saturday.

The only other single-figure fancy at $6.50 is the early Mannerism Stakes market mover Samovare who opened as long as $9.50.

Representing the David Hayes-led Lindsay Park stable and to be ridden by Damien Oliver first-up, the Savabeel four-year-old runs for the first time since finishing four lengths back last (12th) to Tosen Stardom in Flemington’s Group 1 Emirates Stakes (2000m) during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.

She ticks a number of boxes for her campaign starter on Saturday having finished runner-up in two of her three previous resuming runs and boasting the same strong Place record at the Caulfield track.

While yet to win over the distance, Samovare has three seconds and a third from her four 1400m assignments so far and shapes up as a massive top three hope.
