Mick Price’s triple-figure Caulfield Guineas winner Mighty Boss will be out to prove he’s a genuine Group 1 racehorse targeting the Australian Guineas 2018 in the autumn.
Punters could get the Not A Single Doubt colt at $101 odds for his bid in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 14.
In what plenty labelled a “fluke” win, Mighty Boss and jockey Michael Walker went on to defeat a better fancied field of rivals including Kementari (2nd) and Catchy (3rd) in the mile classic.
It was an improved effort on the youngster’s lead-up fourth in the Group 2 Stutt Stakes (1600m) at Moonee Valley, but one that didn’t surprise Price as much as the price would suggest.
Set to welcome back his Guineas winner to the Caulfield stables this week, Price spoke to Racing Victoria on Tuesday and said there were options galore in the autumn for Mighty Boss.
“He’s a sound, tough colt with plenty of options for him,” he said.
“I think he’s still going to be a live chance [in the autumn].
“His Caulfield Guineas win – I know it was at big odds and it was a ‘fluke’ and all that sort of stuff but look, we’ve always had a good opinion of him and I think you’ll find he has a really good prep and is one of the best three-year-olds.”
After a well-earned four week break following his gutsy Caulfield Guineas success, Mighty Boss has started to show zest in the paddock ahead of his return prompting Price to name the Group 1 $750,000 Australian Guineas (1600m) at Flemington on March 3 as an upcoming target.
“Mighty Boss had a month off and he needed his time out,” Price said.
“After the Caulfield Guineas he went to the paddock and he lay down for 10 days.
“He’s a bit of a wound-down horse – I didn’t think I was that hard on him but he was obviously screaming for a holiday.
“In his fifth week [spelling] he started to run around and he was really good so he’ll be set for the Australian Guineas.”
Price will be chasing his third win in the autumn feature having prepared back-to-back Australian Guineas winners with Light Fantastic (2008) and Heart Of Dreams (2009).
The major autumn targets for Mighty Boss could even extend to Sydney with Boss not ruling out a shot at the Group 1 $3 million Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick on April 7 during ‘The Championships’.
“I think if you’ve got a tough 1600-metre horse with lots of stamina about them, you can probably run in the Doncaster and I’d love to run him there,” Price said.
Since 2006 five three-year-olds have beaten the older horses in the Doncaster Mile results, most recently the Chris Waller-trained duo of Sacred Falls (2013) and Kermadec (2015).
