Black Heart Bart Heads 2017 Railway Stakes Nominations & Weights

Darren Weir’s multiple Group 1 winner Black Heart Bart is likely to bypass Saturday racing at Sandown and be saved for a shot at Perth’s Group 1 Railway Stakes 2017 on November 25.

The Perth Summer Racing Carnival celebrates its first major race day Saturday week at Ascot Racecourse with the action headlined by the Group 1 $1 million James Boag’s Premium Railway Stakes (1600m).

Official Railway Stakes nominations for 2017 feature 71 gun milers led by Black Heart Bart allocated the 59kg top weight.

The seven-year-old son of Blackfriars is a Perth expat now based in Victoria with Melbourne Cup winning trainer Weir.

Black Heart Bart raced exclusively in WA up until June of 2015 but hasn’t raced over there since December of 2015.

The gelding raced in that year’s Railway Stakes finishing fourth to Good Project, but has enjoyed five Group 1 victories since then.

He hasn’t won since the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield back in late February and was last seen running under two lengths back fifth to Bonneval in the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) on October 1.

Weir currently has Black Heart Bart dually nominated for Ladbrokes Park on Zipping Classic Day this weekend, the horse entered for the Group 3 $150,000 Kevin Heffernan Stakes (1300m) and the Group 3 $150,000 Sandown Stakes (1500m).

Following the release of the Railway Stakes weights however the $3.7 million earner looks likely to be saved for a Perth return.

“He’s been up the farm a little while and went back down the beach yesterday and he’ll trial tomorrow morning [at Terang] and he’ll be ready to go either this Saturday or in the Railway the following week,” Weir told Racing Victoria on Monday.

“It’s hard to say you could get him back to his best but we’re happy with him.”

Following the Railway Stakes Black Heart Bart looks set to also target the Group 1 $1 million Kingston Town Classic (1800m) on December 9.

Along with Black Heart Bart Weir has also nominated four other horses for the Railway Stakes this summer with the Bob Peters-raced 2016 Perth Cup winner Star Exhibit (54.5kg), recent Moonga Stakes winner Ulmann (54.5kg), seven-year-old Burning Front (54kg) and Makfi stallion Raw Impulse (53kg).

Black Heart Bart sits as a $7 chance in pre-field Railway Stakes betting markets at led by Scales Of Justice ($6.50) and Supply And Demand ($6.50).

The Lindsey Smith-trained Scales Of Justice defends his title in the Group 1 feature having carried 53kg to a runaway 2.75 length win in the race last year before his second in the Kingston Town Stakes behind Stratum Star with 58.5kg.

The Not A Single Doubt gelding goes up to 57.5kg in the Railway Stakes weights this season, Scales Of Justice last seen running a close third in a blanket finish when the beaten odds-on favourite in the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) on November 11.

Caloundra Cup – Grafton Cup double winner Supply And Demand (54.5kg) meanwhile is prepared by Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott, the well-weighted Sebring five-year-old coming off a second with 57.5kg in the Group 3 Chatham Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on November 9.

Following Black Heart Bart in the Railway Stakes weights are the James Cummings-trained Doncaster Mile winner It’s Somewhat (58.5kg) who ran third to Tosen Stardom in last Saturday’s Group 1 Emirates Stakes (2000m) and the Lindsay Park-trained Redkirk Warrior (58kg) who finished 11th in the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) on Emirates Stakes Day.
