There is a standout favourite in Melbourne Cup 2017 betting with money coming for Hughie Morrison’s UK raider Marmelo.
After opening around $8 to win the world’s richest two mile handicap, the Duke Of Marmalade entire has firmed into $7.50 favouritism at Ladbrokes.com.au in markets for this afternoon’s Group 1 $6.25 million Emirates Melbourne Cup (3200m).
A dour stayer who is the right age to win the Melbourne Cup, five-year-old Marmelo won the Group 2 Prix Kergorlay (3000m) in France before travelling down under.
That race produced both Americain (2010) and Protectionist (2014) for their respective Melbourne Cup wins and the first-up sixth when flying home late in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) further put the writing on the wall for Marmelo heading into the 2017 Melbourne Cup.
There has been no love for the Lloyd Williams-raced Almandin to go back-to-back in the race for the first time since Makybe Diva (2003-05) with the defending Melbourne Cup champion easing from $7 to $9.
Also on the drift in Melbourne Cup betting out from $9 to $11 is the Darren Weir-trained Humidor who ran a brave second to Winx in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m), but who must know prove his staying potential over the 3200m.
The Cox Plate has produced two Melbourne Cup winners in the past five years however, so the form is there to be franked again this spring.
