There is a chance punters will see spring Cups horse uncovered in the Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes 2017 on Saturday, our insider betting tips and updated odds for the mile and a half feature found below.
There are 10 remaining stayers in this year’s Group 2 $400,000 Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes (2400m) after the early scratching of the Robert Hickmott-trained, Lloyd Williams-owned Gallante (11).
The stable are still in with two chances that are vying for the Caulfield Cup ballot exemption for Saturday week’s Group 1 that is on offer to the Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes winner.
One of the Hickmott-Williams runners is top of the Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au with Aloft ($3.50) tipped as the one to beat third-up.
The Galileo six-year-old won at Flemington first-up before finishing third in a fast edition of the Listed JRA Trophy (2500m) beaten home three lengths by winning stablemate and reigning Melbourne Cup winner Almandin.
Almandin failed to frank that form next run when unplaced as the beaten favourite in the Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2500m), but Aloft might if this is run to suit pace-wise.
Foundry ($5.50) is the stablemate in the Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes and occupies the third line of betting at $5.50.
The veteran eight-year-old won Sydney’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) a fortnight back with just 50.5kg on his back, so hard to see him enjoying the rise to 56kg this weekend.
The market mover and second favourite at $5 is the Darren Weir-trained Gallic Chieftain who has claims to improve on the JRA Cup sixth to Jon Snow getting out over more metres, while at $6 Charlie Appleby’s visiting English raider Kidmenever who was flying last prep back home is also being kept safe in betting for his debut down under.
It’s an open race, but will the top fancies salute or is there value tipping an upset Ladbrokes Herbert Power Stakes result this weekend?
Boom Time isn’t the best weighted horse in the race, but he did plenty last time out to suggest this is winnable for him. The Lindsay Park-trained stallion finished third to Jon Snow in the Group 3 JRA Cup (2040m) and will enjoy coming back to Caulfield where he is undefeated after three runs at The Valley. Roomier track suits and the step-up in distance is also better as he has winning form up to 2500m. Looks set to peak.
Big price offered for fellow Lindsay Park runner Harlow Gold, the four-year-old Tavistock mare coming off a eighth to Harlem in the Group 3 Naturalism Stakes (2000m). Was fourth to now Caulfield Cup 2017 favourite Bonneval in the Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m) in the autumn, but hasn’t finished in the money since the Vinery Stud Stakes third the run prior. She was a Crown Oaks runner-up last Cup Carnival so has class on her day. Think she’ll be better than the price suggests getting out over 2400m. Can surprise for a place.
Race favourite has been solid this time in and was runner-up at Randwick in April’s Chairman’s Handicap behind a good stayer in Big Duke. Third to the Melbourne Cup winning stablemate in the JRA Trophy last time out at Flemington and has upside third-up in this coming back from 56.5kg to 55.5kg. Right in the mix for the punters.
