Top trainer of three-year-olds this season Tony McEvoy enjoyed a Flemington win on Turnbull Stakes Day with his progressive filly Bring Me Roses running the ideal early VRC Oaks lead-up in the Edward Manifold Stakes 2017.
High Chaparral filly Bring Me Roses went into Saturday’s Group 2 $200,000 Edward Manifold Stakes (1600m) a maiden and emerged post-race as a genuine prospect for the $1 million Group 1 VRC Oaks (2500m) back at the track on November 9 during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
She was a dual placegetter from three earlier career runs back home in Adelaide before heading to Melbourne for the first time in the Edward Manifold Stakes, one event after Winx made history with a six and a half length win in the Turnbull Stakes.
Last time out Bring Me Roses was runner-up in the Listed Morphettville Guineas (1600m) and so, unlike many of her rival three-year-old fillies in the Edward Manifold Stakes, had form over the mile.
She ate up the metres and will progress into the VRC Oaks via a run in the Group 2 $300,000 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) just a few days prior on Saturday November 4 – VRC Derby Day.
Jockey Luke Currie had the ride on the eventual winner Bring Me Roses, who was settled right back off the pace set by the leader Blondie.
She was ultra-impressive once on the famous home straight at Flemington however, charging right down the outside swamping all the on-pace runners and coming away with an impressive and in the end dominant victory.
Second past the post was the lightly-raced Mick Price-trained emergency Hiyaam who made the line-up late, the last start Ballarat winner having travelled three deep throughout in third.
Rounding out the Edward Manifold Stakes trifecta was the beaten Darren Weir-trained favourite Leather’n’lace who had a tough run from the wide barrier, setting fourth on the outside, and who failed to post her fourth win on the trot.
All honours to the winner however who stormed away late, giving Currie a huge victory.
“A massive win, the turn of foot she showed when she came out was unbelievable, she gave me a great feel,” Currie said post-win.
“She hasn’t shown a lot of speed in her couple of runs to date, but she was a little bit fresh today, and obviously Tony’s such a good trainer, he knows what he’s doing.
“That’s her style to get back…when she come out she responded well.
“Couldn’t be any happier with the way she won today.”
McEvoy had left the track early, but stable representative Michael Shepherdson confirmed plans to target the Wakeful Stakes – VRC Oaks double with Bring Me Roses.
“Tony was excited to get her to Flemington at the big track and see what she could do,” he said.
“She’ll train on now into the Wakeful and then the Oaks.
“This will help bring her on too.”
Bring Me Roses has now firmed into $6 co-favouritism with Pinot in the futures VRC Oaks betting markets at Ladbrokes.com.au.
