Murwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn is looking...
Lindsay Park’s Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes winner Catchy is the headline Thousand Guineas 2017 second acceptor for the mile feature on October 14 despite talks the gun filly could take on the boys at the same meeting.
The Group 1 $2 million Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) against the colts and geldings potentially calls for the flying daughter of Fastnet Rock who features in second acceptances for both it and the Group 1 $500,000 Schweppes Thousand Guineas (1600m) against her own kind.
Catchy has to date won five of her seven career starts, most notably at Caulfield Racecourse in the autumn taking out the Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).
This time in after her Golden Slipper failure on a wet Sydney track, she ran a first-up second in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) and then atoned with a three-quarter length win over Jukebox in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 16.
The bookies are taking no chances with Catchy in futures Thousand Guineas betting and she pays $3.50 to win through Ladbrokes.com.au after the release of 45 second acceptances.
She races again this Sunday returning to Caulfield on Underwood Stakes Day in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) and is also clear favourite for that.
Should the David Hayes-led Lindsay Park stable opt for the Caulfield Guineas target, Catchy will be out to make history as just the second filly to win joining Surround (1976).
If kept to the easier Thousand Guineas field, she is a massive chance to hand Hayes his fourth win in the race and first since Stay With Me (2015).
Hayes has also paid second acceptances for fellow Thousand Guineas hopefuls: Formality, Pure Scot, Wanted Diva, Sanadaat and Sia.
Challenging Catchy for favouritism in the all-in Thousand Guineas odds is the Anthony Freedman-trained Shoals, a winner of all four of her career runs so far.
Also a daughter of gun sire Fastnet Rock, Shoals was last seen winning the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on September 9.
The dual Group winner is yet to race at Caulfield, but will take on Catchy at the track in the Thousand Guineas Prelude this Sunday.
The other key Thousand Guineas-bound filly likely to run in the Prelude race on the weekend is the Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Booker who ran third to Catchy in the Danehill Stakes.
Beaten only a length down the straight, the daughter of Written Tycoon was impressive late and also has form around the boys having run a close second to Merchant Navy first-up in the Group 3 H.D.F. McNeil Stakes (1200m).
Alizee for Godolphin also features in the Thousand Guineas second acceptances this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival, the in-form Sepoy filly yet to race outside of Sydney.
She has been outstanding in her early spring runs however including the one and a quarter-length win in the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on September 16.
The Tea Rose Stakes form was franked last Saturday by the runner-up Champagne Cuddles who finished second again, this time behind runaway winner Trapeze Artist in the Group 1 Golden Rose Stakes (1400m).
Other noteworthy Thousand Guineas second acceptances include Crown Oaks-nominated Aloisia for the suspended Ciaron Maher and the Darren Weir-trained Street Cry filly Leather’n’lace who posted a third win on the trot at Caulfield on September 23 by a big margin.
The Thousand Guineas 2017 final field and barriers are set for release on October 10, the second declarations found below and updated markets open at Ladbrokes.com.au.
