The addition of the blinkers for the first time has helped put Queensland trained mare Savanna Amour back in the winner’s stall for the Group 3 $150,000 Ladbrokes Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield today.
Savanna Amour disappointed Eagle Farm trainer John Meager with her first up seventh in the Group 3 $150,000 Bletchingly Stakes (1200m) at Sandown on August 6 on a heavy track but back on a dry surface with the blinkers on, the Love Conquers All mare was able to find winning form.
Meagher is keen to test Savanna Amour over 1600m and will now work our a program for the remainder of the Spring Carnival.
“She is a great mare, she has a great action,” Meagher said.
“At Sandown I was a little bit disappointed but he (Melham) just said she didn’t handle the ground at all.”
“What we need to do, we need her to get 1600m. We will just have a look and just plan.”
Winning jockey Ben Melham had Savanna Amour in the first half of the field but found himself in traffic in the early stages of the straight and was looking desperately for some clear running.
The split came late and Savanna Amour ($15) dashed through to record a short head win of the $81 outsider Flying Jess who was chiming in out wide on the track.
Third placegetter Written Era ($21) with Dwayne Dunn in the saddle was doing her best work at the concluding stages to be a nose behind the second horse.
The disappointed of the race was the $1.80 favourite Fuhyrk who missed a place after Craig Williams couldn’t find the way clear for most of the straight and finished in seventh spot.
