The Lindsay Park stable are eyeing the Sir...
Mick Price’s nicely-bred colt Masculino stepped-up his spring bid ahead of a possible Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas 2017 target winning first-up at Cranbourne on Sunday.
The son of Smart Missile took his career record to two wins from three starts when flying home by over three lengths on a Heavy (9) track to take out the Class 1 Handicap over 1400m.
The three-year-old’s regular rider Jake Noonan continued his association aboard the up-and-comer having also been aboard for the horse’s debut win in the mud at Benalla in late April and his close fifth behind Aloisia at Flemington on May 20.
Ciaron Maher’s Azamour filly Aloisia franked the form out of that race as she went on to finish a brave second to Capital Gain on June 10 at Doomben in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins (1600m) during the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival.
Noonan was impressed with Masculino’s on-speed performance on Sunday and believes he is a genuine spring contender looking ahead to longer distanced targets over the coming months.
“I was going to look to take a sit in behind them but he bounced so good,” Noonan told Racing Victoria.
“He raced a bit on the fresh side and he’d had a trial on Monday, so I was a bit surprised that he came out on the chewy as much as he did, but he’s a colt so he didn’t take much harm from the trial.
“He’s pretty adaptable and I think he’ll go just as good on top of the ground.
“He ran a good race at Flemington and by that point he’d probably got to the end of his preparation.
“He’s a progressive colt and I think he’s going to get better as he gets over further.
“You can ride him on speed or off speed and he’ll be hitting the line.”
Masculino holds a nomination for the Group 1 $2 million Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m), run on October 14.
Price also has Masculino entered for the following weekend’s Group 3 $350,000 Caulfield Classic (2000m) on October 21 over further distance.
The next round of Caulfield Guineas 2017 entries are first acceptances closing on September 12.
