Egg Tart Trials Well ahead of Epsom Handicap 2017

Chris Waller’s dual Oaks winner Egg Tart caught the eye at the Warwick Farm trials on Friday morning as the smart mare progresses towards a 2017 Epsom Handicap run next month.

In her second public appearance as a four-year-old, Egg Tart had Brenton Avdulla aboard for her strong second in the Group & Listed Trial over 1000m where she crossed just over two lengths off stablemate Veladero in the morning’s opening heat.

It was a nice improvement from her earlier Warwick Farm hit-out over 800m on August 14 when she ran last (10th) behind Spieth.

Sitting just shy of $800,000 in prize money, Egg Tart has won six of her eight career runs and progressed through the ranks very quickly during her autumn – winter bid as a three-year-old filly.

After a mile win at Flemington by nearly three lengths on Anzac Day, Waller through Egg Tart in the deep end taking her to Adelaide in early May for the Group 1 Schweppes Oaks (2010m).

There she relished the step-up in distance and posted a narrow but impressive victory over Kenedna (2nd) and Ana Royale (3rd).

Egg Tart then travelled to the Brisbane a month later and saluted by over a length in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m) at Doomben.

Waller has an ambitions spring preparation planned for the mare this time in including a Royal Randwick assignment on September 30 in the Group 1 $1 million Epsom Handicap (1600m) over the mile.

Waller has prepared three of the past four Epsom Handicap winners with Boban (2013), He’s Your Man (2014) and the mighty Winx (2015).

All-in Epsom Handicap betting online at Ladbrokes.com.au currently has Egg Tart installed as the clear $7 favourite ahead of stablemate Foxplay ($11).

Another new season four-year-old, Waller’s Foxwedge grey Foxplay won the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) at the Epsom Handicap track and distance during April’s ‘The Championships’.

She kicked off her spring campaign last Saturday at Randwick and finished second only to Winx, who came from dead last after missing the kick, in a nail-biting edition of the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m).

Waller is also considering a trip south this Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival with Egg Tart for a possible shot at the Group 1 $3 million Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 21.

Sydney’s leading trainer, Waller is yet to prepare a Caulfield Cup winner and the bookies currently have Egg Tart at an all-in quote of $17 to break his maiden status in this year’s edition of the mile and a half classic.

If not the Caulfield Cup, Waller could keep Egg Tart to a shorter distance and put her up against her superstar stablemate Winx in the Group 1 $3 million Ladbrokes Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley on October 28.

Cox Plate 2017 nominations closed earlier in the month and dual defending champion Winx ($1.50) is already the odds-on favourite to make it three straight wins in Australasia’s weight-for-age championship.

Egg Tart pays $34 in pre-field Cox Plate odds at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au.

Caulfield Cup nominations for 2017 close on August 29, while those for the Epsom Handicap are open until September 4.
