She Will Reign Trials Ahead of Moir Stakes 2017

Gary Portelli’s Golden Slipper winning filly She Will Reign is engaged to take on super sprinter Chautauqua in a star-studded Warwick Farm trial on Friday morning ahead of her resuming run in Melbourne’s 2017 Moir Stakes.

The brilliant young daughter of Manhattan Rain reunites with her regular rider Ben Melham in the Group & Listed Trial over 800m at the course proper and the hoop is excited to be back aboard the now three-year-old.

“It looks a pretty fair trial, so we’re obviously going to get a line on where she’s at,” Melham told Racing Victoria this week.

“It’s her first trial back, so I wouldn’t imagine we’d be asking too much of her, but she’s quite a natural forward horse and very competitive, so she will trial well nevertheless.”

A winner of four of her five career starts for over $2.5 million in prize money to date, She Will Reign hasn’t raced since saluting on a Heavy (10) track at Rosehill on March 18 in the Group 1 $3.5 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m).

It was an emphatic win by over two lengths in the world’s richest race for two-year-olds by She Will Reign who turned the tables on her last start conqueror Frolic after the duo ran one-two but in reverse order in Randwick’s Group 2 Reisling Stakes (1200m) a fortnight earlier.

She Will Reign is yet to race outside of Sydney, but Portelli has earmarked her new season debut in Victoria on September 29 in The Valley’s Group 1 $500,000 Moir Stakes (1000m).

The filly is also set to return home during the Sydney Spring Racing Carnival in the Restricted $10 million The Everest (1200m) at Royal Randwick on October 14.

Futures The Everest 2017 betting at Ladbrokes.com.au is dominated by Team Hawkes’ triple TJ Smith Stakes champion Chautauqua ($4.60) followed by She Will Reign ($6).

Punters will get an early guide to how both sprinters are travelling when they face off in Friday morning’s trial at the Farm, the heat also featuring the likes of Doncaster Mile winner It’s Somewhat and the Joe Pride-trained Terravista.

As for pre-nomination Moir Stakes odds online for She Will Reign’s first-up assignment, the gun filly is the $4 early favourite ahead of Toby Edmonds’ Magic Millions Classic winner Houtzen ($6).

Gold Coast-based Houtzen has also won four of her five starts to date with her only loss being a fifth behind She Will Reign in the Golden Slipper Stakes results from the autumn.

The daughter of I Am Invincible made her maiden public appearance since blitzing a Gold Coast trial for three-year-olds at home on August 21 over 1000m for an easy three and a half-length victory.

Virage De Fortune (2005) was the last filly to take out the Moir Stakes, a race won by Mick Price’s three-year-old colt Extreme Choice (2016) last Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.
