Chris Waller has underlined the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) as a target for Omei Sword, but concedes that he is unsure how the rising four-year-old will perform during the forthcoming Spring Carnival.
Omei Sword has shown outstanding ability through her short racing career so far, but has also been plagued by injury; experiencing respiratory issues during the 2016 Spring Carnival before suffering a bleeding attack during the running of the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) in autumn this year.
Waller told AAP that the daughter of High Chaparral is less than a fortnight away from her first barrier trial and he believes that she has all the makings of a Golden Pendant mare; a race which boasts $400,000 in prize money.
“We don’t know much about her,” Waller said.
“She is about ten days away from a trial and could be a perfect horse for the Golden Pendant.”
Omei Sword showed plenty of ability prior to making her competitive debut and immediately stamped herself as one to watch when she flew home to beat a talented field to the line, including Spright, in the Peter Svendsen Maiden (1100m) in early autumn last year.
Progressing to a close second behind Calliope in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m), Omei Sword had clearly had enough by the time she beat only a handful of runners home in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 2nd.
Resuming in spring for an impressive and near four-length win in the Group 2 Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) on August 20th, Omei Sword savaged the line for second behind Astern in the Group 1 Golden Rose (1400m), but was forced back into the paddock with the previously mentioned respiratory problems.
Omei Sword resumed this year for second behind La Bella Diosa in the Group 2 Surround Stakes (1400m), in what was her only other start prior to the Coolmore Classic.
