The Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas 2017 is the major spring aim for former Kiwi galloper Qiji Phoenix who is set to join the Sydney stables of champion horseman Chris Waller.
Connections of the former Donna Logan & Chris Gibbs-trained Not A Single Doubt colt confirmed to the New Zealand Racing Desk over the weekend that the rising three-year-old was bound for Waller’s care this season.
A winner of three of his four career starts, Qiji Phoenix was last seen debuting down under for a disappointing seventh behind Melody Belle at Eagle Farm in the wet on May 27 in the Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m).
A part-share in Qiji Phoenix, who pulled through his latest run on the unsuitable going without any serious issues, has been purchased by the Australian-based Aquis Farm who now race the up-and-comer in partnership with the Chinese-based Mr Fudong Niu, Hongwei Chen and Alex Teng of Horse Feng Bloodstock.
“I am delighted that Aquis Farm and Horse Feng Bloodstock will be joining me in racing Qiji Phoenix,” Fudong Niu said.
“He will join Chris Waller’s stable with a view to enhancing his stallion credentials.
“I can’t thank Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs enough for their efforts and it was based on Donna’s recommendation that we sought out Chris Waller.”
Qiji Phoenix was a $75,000 buy from the 2016 NZB Select Yearling Sale and new co-owner Teng is keen to have the horse race in elite level company over the upcoming spring season.
“He has had a good spell at Aquis Farm in the warmer weather in Queensland after the Sires’ Produce and will be heading to Sydney next week,” he said.
“We will be guided by Chris, but a race like the Caulfield Guineas looks a likely spring target.”
The $2 million Group Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas (1600m) takes place over the mile on October 14 on the same day Sydney debuts the $10 million The Everest at Royal Randwick.
The first round of Caulfield Guineas 2017 nominations close on September 12.
All-in Caulfield Guineas odds at race sponsor Ladbrokes.com.au have the undefeated Tony McEvoy-trained Domesday colt Royal Symphony as the clear $6 favourite following his runaway black-type win over the Flemington mile on Finals Day on July 8.
Qiji Phoenix meanwhile can be found further down the futures Ladbrokes Caulfield Guineas betting markets at $31 to hand Waller with a second win in the feature following his success with Press Statement in 2015.
