A full line-up of winter milers will take to the Flemington track on Saturday in the Winter Championship Series Final 2017 as part of the bumper nine-race Finals Day program.
Running as Flemington Race 7 at 3:30pm (AEST), this season’s $150,000 Listed VRC-CRV Winter Championship Series Final (1600m) has attracted 16 starters plus an emergency in the Peter Healey-trained Riyadh (17).
Heading the field and weights with 60kg is the Chris Waller-trained Amovatio, Damien Oliver to ride the six-year-old son of Al Maher.
A winner of over $900,000 in career prize money, Amovatio is out to break a notable drought that goes back to his 2016 Group 3 Hawkesbury Cup (1600m) win.
On fire last winter, the horse hasn’t finished in the money since June last year and is out to atone for a string of unplaced runs including behind Petrology in the Travis Harrison Cup on June 17 over the mile at Moonee Valley.
Lindsay Park saddle-up the Travis Harrison Cup winner Petrology in Saturday’s rematch, the in-form Fastnet Rock five-year-old chasing back-to-back wins.
Flemington isn’t the gelding’s preferred track however with Petrology recording just the one win from 10 starts at the course.
He also rises from 54kg last start to 55.5kg this weekend, but is drawn well in gate three with Cory Parish retaining the ride.
Petrology is joined in the Winter Championship Final field by two of his stablemates, Mihany and Sovereign Nation drawn in barriers six and 12 respectively.
Also with three runners in the mix is local horseman Michael Moroney, a three-time winning trainer in the race, whose contingent includes the rails-drawn Strike Force.
A four-year-old son of Lookin At Lucky, Strike Force has had one run for one win at Flemington back in March and was last seen taking out a 1617m Benchmark 78 at Sale on June 18.
He comes back from 59kg to the 54kg lightweight on Saturday and Michael Dee comes on for the ride.
Moroney’s other two runners are Group 1 performer and 40-start veteran Rhythm To Spare, and 1600m specialists Loyalty Man who boasts five wins from seven starts over the distance.
Other noteworthy hopes in the race include Sue Jaensch’s last start Swan Hill Cup winner Victory Downs, Tasmanian raider Count Da Vinci who won the Hobart Cup over the mile and a half in February before his last start second to Big Duke in the Launceston Cup and the in-form Tshahitsi.
