Flemington’s 2017 Myer Classic could be on the spring agenda for John Bary’s Kiwi mare Miss Wilson this Melbourne Cup Carnival.
The rising five-year-old daughter of Stratum has enjoyed five wins over her 17 starts to date and was last seen running a brave fourth to Charmont in the Group 1 NZ Thoroughbred Breeders (1600m) at Te Rapa back in April.
That followed her career best performance winning a group 3 mile race at Trentham in late March.
“She had two months off after that and she’s been back in the stable since June 5,” Bary told the New Zealand Racing Desk.
“She spelled on the property here and was rugged and fed twice a day. She’s cruising around now and she’s a happy horse.”
Miss Wilson is no stranger to Victorian racing having had nine starts here during 2015 – 16 including her unplaced run bethink Catch A Fire at Caulfield in the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) as a 40/1 roughie.
Having shown huge improvement over the past six months, Bary is considering bypassing the early spring features in New Zealand and heading straight to Australia to give Miss Wilson a chance at Group race success across the Tasman.
The Hastings-based trainer has the Group 1 Tarzino Trophy as the preferable first-up option on the domestic front, but certainly hasn’t ruled out heading to Melbourne should she miss a start in the race.
“The first leg of the series here is attractive if the track is okay for her and if she can get in,” Bary said.
“She’s only won a Group 3 for fillies and mares so she could be borderline.
“If she wasn’t going to get a run, I wouldn’t think twice about heading straight to Melbourne without a race here.”
If Miss Wilson heads down under, Bary plans to keep her in the company of fillies and mares naming the $500,000 Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) over the Flemington mile on Victoria Derby Day, Saturday November 4, as the major aim.
“There’s plenty of fillies and mares’ races at set weights over there for her, starting with the Let’s Elope and, if she was going well enough, the Myer Stakes [Myer Classic] would be her main aim,” he said.
The $200,000 Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) is scheduled for September 16 at Flemington on Makybe Diva Stakes Day.
Miss Wilson is a beautifully bred mare being a half-sister to former New Zealand Horse of the Year Jimmy Choux who Bary prepared for a host of big runs in Australia including his 2011 Rosehill Guineas win and Cox Plate second behind Pinker Pinker later that year.
