2017 Sunshine Coast Guineas Nominations Feature Next Winx?

The race that began the incredible 17 straight wins of Winx takes place this weekend on Caloundra Cup Day with the nation looking to the Sunshine Coast Guineas 2017 nominations hoping to spot the next big thing in Australian racing.

Back in 2015 as a three-year-old, Chris Waller’s now Hall of Fame inductee Winx won the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1600m) over the Caloundra mile.

At her next start she won her maiden Group 1 taking out the Queensland Oaks by over three lengths and she hasn’t tasted defeat since.

As the $12.89 million earner gears up for her attempt at a record-equalling third Cox Plate win this spring in Melbourne, the 2017 Sunshine Coast Guineas is set to run on Saturday in Queensland.

The XXXX sponsored winter feature attracted a bumper 32 early entries, but Waller is without a nominee this time round.

One of the standout young three-year-olds in the mix is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Fastnet Rock filly My True Love.

Runner-up to stablemate Prompt Response in the Group 2 Dane Ripper Stakes (1350m) on June 10, she missed out on a Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1350m) run last weekend sitting as an unneeded emergency for the season’s final elite level.

Prompt Response managed to frank the Dane Ripper form with her brave second behind upset Tatt’s Tiara winner Tycoon Tara, something Tulloch Lodge will be hoping works in the favour of My True Love this weekend at the Sunshine Coast.

A total of 12 fillies are nominated to take on the colts and geldings in this season’s Sunshine Coast Guineas including also the Matthew Smith-trained Group 1 placed Faraway Town.

The daughter of Not A Single Doubt is best known for her third to subsequent Cox Plate placegetter Yankee Rose in the Group 1 ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Randwick in April of 2016.

She also ran fourth next race over the Randwick mile behind Prized Icon in the Group 1 Champagne Stakes (1600m).

Faraway Town has won just one of her 16 career starts to date however when saluting over 1100m in November of 2015, but after some nice form this time in she is a livewire chance to break the drought in the Sunshine Coast Guineas.

Her last mile start produced a third to Dawn Wall in the Group 3 Kembla Grange Classic (1600m) on March 10, which followed the second to Invincible Gem at Randwick in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1600m) in mid-February.

Other notable hopes in the mix include Matt Kropp’s in-form gelding Atouchmore shooting for a third Queensland win on the trot, the Liam Birchley-trained Wayne Wilson runner-up on Stradbroke Day Crack Me Up, Michael Moroney’s Queensland Guineas fourth placegetter Top Of The Range and the Chris Munce-trained Constantine coming off four straight wins.

Check out the full Sunshine Coast Guineas 2017 nominations below, the final field out on Wednesday followed by updated Caloundra Cup Day odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au.
