Sunshine Coast horseman Darryl Hansen plans to target a feature race back home in a fortnight with his Eye Liner Stakes winner from the weekend Monsieur Gustave on track for a shot at the 2017 Glasshouse Handicap.
The progressive Al Maher four-year-old jumped a $17 roughie in betting at Ipswich on Saturday to take out the $175,000 Listed City Of Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes (1350m).
Improving on a lead-up fourth over 1200m at his home track and continuing his undefeated record on Soft going, Monsieur Gustave was given a gun ride by Queensland’s leading apprentice Tiffani Brooker to score an upset in the Eye Liner.
“I watched the race on a big screen at Kilcoy and it was very exciting,” Hansen, who was at Kilcoy on Saturday watching his runner Doumbek finish third in a Class One, told Racing Queensland.
“I love winning big races.”
On the line Monsieur Gustave had a narrow margin to spare over the Rex Lipp-trained In His Stride ($18) in a blanket finish after powering down the straight to run down the leader for his short head success.
The Darren Beadman-trained Godolphin galloper Federal ($10) rounded out the juicy Eye Liner Stakes trifecta just a neck off the winner in third.
Hansen has enjoyed a number of notable Queensland feature race wins, highlighted by the 2015 Magic Millions 2YO Classic success with Le Chef at the Gold Coast.
In 2013 he also took out the Group 2 Champagne Stakes with Vo Heart at Eagle Farm.
This Queensland Winter Racing Carnival he is hoping to keep the new found form of Monsieur Gustave going with the $175,000 Listed Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) on Caloundra Cup Day, July 1, next on the agenda.
“This is just as exciting as some of my other big race wins,” Hansen said.
“He’ll go on to the Glasshouse in two weeks now.
“He’s a great horse but he’s had a few problems which we’ve finally sorted out.
“He’s always shown the ability, but he kept going shin sore in one leg.
“That’s why for a long time we’ve had to give him these short campaigns.
“We’d get three good runs out of him and then he’d go sore. It’s been a big problem, but I’m hoping now he’s a bit older he’s grown out of it.
“I always wanted to run in the Eye Liner and then the Glasshouse at Caloundra, but I was a bit worried about him getting a run.
“Fortunately he scraped into the field and hopefully that will ensure he gets a run in the Glasshouse now.”
Brooker was also thrilled with the Eye Liner Stakes result, which added to a top carnival for the junior hoop who took out the Group 3 Gunsynd Quality back in April aboard the John Zielke-trained Dreams Aplenty.
“It’s a bit different to Dreams Aplenty,” she told The Courier Mail.
“I’d had that association with him and he was a hot favourite to win that race.
“This time he was at long odds and it’s a bit of a surprise.
“Full credit to Darryl for getting him here second up and down in the weights.”
