A smart field of fillies and mares faces off in Saturday’s Gai Waterhouse Classic 2017 at Ipswich, betting tips and the latest odds on the last at the Ipswich Cup Day meeting detailed below.
Due to jump at 4:33pm (AEST) as Ipswich Race 9, this year’s $100,000 Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic (1350m) field features 16 hopefuls including the two emergencies who have both gained a start.
Five of the runners are currently under double-figures in Gai Waterhouse Classic betting at Ladbrokes.com.au with the Godolphin-raced top weight Kinshachi and the Joe Pride-trained Sydney visitor I Am Zelady sharing $5.50 favouritism.
The other dangers in the mix include early market mover Maternal ($6.50) looking to overcome the outside alley and the Tony Gollan-trained Duporth four-year-old Dee Nine Elle ($8.50) who has outstanding form on Heavy going, while money is also coming in for progressive Snitzel filly Slumber Party representing Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott.
So will the top fancies be first past the post in the Gai Waterhouse Classic results on the weekend or is there an upset pending from the likes of Banda Spice ($11) or the in-form Lucky Show Girl ($19) chasing a third win on the trot from the inside alley?
A nice barrier four draw will put this Brisbane-trained mare in the mix at Ipswich where she boasts a win and a second from three previous starts. Her form in the wet is top-notch (4-1-2-1) and the return to Heavy going has her improving on the unplaced (11th) Helen Coughlan Stakes run at Doomben on a Good (4) from June 3. She had a tough run from out wide on the firm track that day, but was right in the mix the run prior on a Heavy (8) finishing a half-length third. Jockey Jim Byrne will have her in the finish and the extra distance is a non-issue (12-3-4-1).
Huge price on offer for this value pick of the race, the four-year-old Show A Heart mare having won three of her four runs this time in. Last two were at the Gold Coast, including on a Soft (5) from barrier 15 of 15 on May 17. She’s had four Ipswich runs for two placings to date, has winning form at this distance and up to a mile so should be ready to peak at 1350m on Saturday. Inside run gives her and jockey Ronnie Stewart the pick of positions and she’s well-weighted. Also has winning form in the wet so looks overs.
Money is coming for this widely-drawn daughter of Street Cry prepared by Godolphin’s interim trainer Darren Beadman. She won over the distance at Doomben on Slow going by three lengths in mid-May, before the ninth to Bonny O’Reilly in the Helen Coughlan last time out. The firm-going made that a tough run from the outside barrier (16 of 16). She has the same awkward gate to overcome here, but the extra metres will help as she is four-from-five over the distance.
