Cellargirl scores first up win in Bill Carter Stakes

Pint sized filly Cellargirl scored an impressive first up win in the Listed $100,000 JRA Bill Carter Stakes (1200m) at Doomben today.

Eagle Farm trainer Kelly Schweida prepared Cellargirl for her first up victory off the back of one barrier trial win and said that was enough for the lightly framed filly to return to the race track in winning style.

“She is only a little light filly and that is why we only gave her the one trial,” Schweida said.

Winning jockey James Orman was able to get the perfect trail on Cellargirl ($6) from an inside barrier and sat just behind the two leaders before getting a split in the straight to go on and record an impressive first up win.

Runner up Skate To Paris ($8) tried hard in the straight and She’s Our Star ($8) ran home nicely for third.

The Peter and Paul Snowden trained Pretty Fast was sent out as the $4.20 favourite and tried hard over the concluding stages but just missed a place.

Schweida praised the ride of Orman but said the good barrier was a huge factor in the filly’s win.

“The alley made a big difference. She got into a good spot and I wish they were all like that,” Schweida said.

“I could not have even rode her any better,” Schwieda joked.

Schweida will look for some more suitable races for the Cellargirl over the rest of the Winter Carnival and hopefully pick up some more black type races.

“She will just chase a few of these two year old races,” Schweida said.

“There are a lot of races around for her, especially being a filly and it is really good to win a black type like that.”
