Dothraki Heads 2017 Moreton Cup Field & Weights

Peter & Paul Snowden’s class galloper Dothraki heads the Moreton Cup 2017 field and weights at Doomben Racecourse this weekend on Queensland Oaks Day.

Moved from the rain-affected Eagle Farm track to Doomben, this season’s $175,000 Group 2 Ascot Green Moreton Cup (1200m) runs over a shorter distance and was formerly known as the QTC Cup.

Originally there were 15 final acceptors for the handicap sprint but the early scratching of Bonny O’Reilly, who instead runs in the Listed Helen Coughlan Stakes (1200m) later on the card, leaves a field of 14.

Now due to jump from barrier six giving the weight away with 59kg is the consistent Mossman six-year-old Dothraki.

The gelding is second-up on Saturday having run a close third last time out under a hefty 60.5kg at Scone when only one and a half lengths beaten in the Listed Ortensia Stakes (1100m).

Dothraki has since won a Rosehill trial and is looking to break a notable drought that goes back to October of 2015.

He has good form at the Doomben track however including a second in the Group 1 BTC Cup (1200m) here in May last year.

Team Snowden have also accepted for Snippets Land (56.5kg) and in-form three-year-old Attention who gets in on a nice 53kg light weight.

Six-year-old Snippets Land is looking to improve on a sixth to subsequent Kingsford Smith Cup runner-up Jungle Edge in the Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) from May 20.

Attention is drawn a treat in gate four, the Stratum colt set to fly dropping right down in weight after carting 57kg to a brave fourth against his own age last time out in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m).

A subsequent winning trial at the same course brings the youngster on fitness wise, but while the weight and draw suits Attention could struggle over 1200m with his winning form having been over 1350m – 1400m to date.

Another in-form light weight getting in on the minimum is the Godolphin-raced Handfast, the Street Cry four-year-old having run fourth in his two latest starts.

He is also a BRC Sprint graduate when nearly six lengths beaten for fourth by Jungle Edge.

Coming off better lead-ups are Toby Edmonds’ last start Doomben winner The Virginian and his stablemate Siegfried who was runner-up at the Gold Coast on AD Hollindale Stakes Day.

Well-bred Hinchinbrook four-year-old The Virginian saw Doomben for the first time on May 20 and handled a Heavy (9) track for a three-quarter length success in the Listed Chief De Beers (1050m).

He looks to retain his winning form stepping up to 1200m second-up off an extended spell and jockey Jim Byrne retains the ride from a good gate three draw, the galloper only going up a half-kilo to 54.5kg.

Jet Spur six-year-old Siegfried meanwhile drew the outside barrier (15 into 14) with Jeff Lloyd continuing his association with the gelding who has run top three in his past six starts including a second to Religify in the Listed Prime Minister’s Cup (1400m).
