The feature race in Sydney on Saturday is the 2017 WJ McKell Cup at Royal Randwick and betting on the staying clash is a two horse battle between Allergic and Broadside.
Stealing the show as Randwick Race 7 at 3:00pm (AEST), the field for this year’s $150,000 Listed WJ McKell Cup (2400m) is down to 11 after the early scratching of Lautaro (3).
Current favourite in the updated WJ McKell Cup betting odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2.70 and firming for the win is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Broadside.
A last start winner over 2000m at Rosehill, the Raise The Flag five-year-old has had one run for one win at Randwick and is out to extend his winning form up to 2400m for the first time here on the short seven day turnaround.
Helping him get out over the metres is the notable drop in weight from 57kg to Saturday’s 53kg minimum with Tim Clark taking over in the saddle.
His main danger looking at the WJ McKell Cup odds giving the weight away with the 59kg top kilos is the Darren Beadman-trained Godolphin galloper Allergic.
Joshua Parr is on the super-consistent son of Street Cry who is second-up on Saturday after a narrow second behind Top Of My List at Rosehill on May 6 in the Listed Lord Mayor’s Cup (2000m).
That was his third top three run on the trot and his last mile and a half effort produced the distant third behind Big Duke in the Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m) on a Heavy (10) track in March.
He’s yet to finish out of the money in three starts over 2400m and even under the big weight could be the one to beat home.
Outside the dominant duo there is one other runner under $10 with Richard Of Yorke ($9) getting in on the 53kg minimum weight.
Chris Waller saddles-up the Oasis Dream five-year-old who is out to improve on a last start sixth over 2200m at Scone when carrying 58.5kg from barrier 16 of 16.
Saturday he’ll relish the big drop in weight and more favourable gate, looking to return to the form that saw him salute by two lengths as the favourite at this track and distance in the wet on April 22.
Of the double-figure fancies those with claims of a top three finish include the other Tulloch Lodge runner Multitude ($11) last seen winning over 2200m at Warwick Farm and Godolphin’s second starter Big Blue ($11) coming off a Lord Mayor’s sixth.
