James Cummings’ highly-rated Sydney raider Good Standing is one of the early standouts among Saturday’s Fred Best Classic 2017 nominations for the Group 3 at Eagle Farm Racecourse.
A key support act on the Kingsford-Smith Cup Day program, this year’s $150,000 Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1400m) drew 30 three-year-olds at nomination stage on Monday.
The set weights clash is a traditional lead-up to the lucrative $350,000 Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) over the Eagle Farm mile in a fortnight’s time as part of the Stradbroke Handicap Day line-up.
Dual Group winner Good Standing enjoyed a lead-up win in Brisbane taking out the Listed Queensland Day Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on May 13 by nearly three lengths.
He’ll be out to continue that form in his first Eagle Farm start at the roomier track over a similar distance on Saturday if accepted into the Fred Best Classic field.
The Queensland Day Stakes runner-up Sylpheed is also entered for a potential rematch with her last start conqueror on Saturday.
Prepared at the Gold Coast by Toby Edmonds, the Real Saga filly improved on a close sixth when only one and a half-lengths beaten in the Group 3 Gold Coast Guineas (1200m) when second in the Queensland Day Stakes.
The best performed of the fillies featuring in this season’s Fred Best Classic nominations though is the Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained Prompt Response.
A well-bred daughter of Beneteau, Prompt Response has won only two of her 13 career starts but has finished runner-up in three of her latest four starts this campaign.
She was narrowly beaten by under a quarter-length in both the Group 3 Hawkesbury Guineas (1400m) on April 29 and Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m) at Scone on May 13 and could take on the boys in Queensland on Saturday.
The best out of the Gold Coast Guineas earlier in the month nominated for this weekend’s event is the New Zealand-trained Heroic Valour.
Group 1 placed back across the Tasman, the Fastnet Rock colt hails from the Matamata stables of Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards and comes off a second by the barest of margins behind the winner Savanna Amour in the Group 3 at the Gold Coast in his first run down under.
The other standout Fred Best Classic-bound three-year-old is the John Zielke-trained Dreams Aplenty from Toowoomba who chases a fifth win on the trot.
Two back the flying son of Dream Ahead won the Toowoomba Guineas (1625m) at his home track as the odds-on favourite.
Dreams Aplenty then brought that form to Eagle Farm in late April winning the Group 3 Gunsynd Classic (1600m) and taking his record at the track to two wins and a second from three runs.
See below for the full Fred Best Classic 2017 nominations, the field & barriers along with updated markets at Ladbrokes.com.au set for release on Wednesday.
