Jungle Edge Heads 2017 BRC Sprint Field & Weights

Mick Bell’s stable ace Jungle Edge is up in Brisbane on the weekend heading the BRC Sprint 2017 field and weights for the last on Doomben Cup Day.

Set to close the card as Doomben Race 8 at 4:36pm (AEST), this season’s $125,000 Group 3 BRC Sprint (1350m) field is down to 15 starters after the early withdrawal of Savanna Amour (6) who instead runs in the QTIS 3YOs Plate over 1200m earlier on the program.

Set to carry 58kg giving the weight away to his rivals and drawn out in barrier 12 (into 11) is in-form six-year-old Jungle Edge who was one of the surprise performers in Sydney over the autumn.

He relished a 51kg light weight and Heavy (10) Rosehill track on March 18 when only a quarter-length third having led nearly all-the-way in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) as a $41 roughie.

Next-up Jungle Edge won the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1200m) at the same track by two lengths, before running a brave third to Tivaci (1st) and Le Romain (2nd) in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m).

Last time out he failed to really fire under 60kg when fifth to Ulmann in the Listed Wangoom Handicap (1200m) and will appreciate any rain around in Brisbane ahead of his Doomben debut.

Darren Weir’s Wangoom Handicap winner at Warrnambool last time out Ulmann is also backing-up in the BRC Sprint field this weekend.

The Sebring five-year-old was two and a quarter-lengths ahead of the runner-up in the showdown on May 3 carrying 56kg and gets a chance at back-to-back victories getting into the BRC Sprint on 56.5kg with John Allen to ride from a gun barrier two draw.

Also coming off a lead-up win is the flying Kiwi Splurge who has won five of his past six starts.

Opie Bosson rides the Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards-trained four-year-old who debuts down under at career start number 12 on Saturday.

The Savabeel stallion has been in outstanding form in the New Zealand sprints during the autumn, including a Group 3 victory at Ellerslie two back and a last start win under 59.5kg at Te Rapa on April 29.

He’ll relish coming back to 56.5kg this weekend and will be even better over the BRC Sprint distance having winning form up to a mile back home.

Drawn the extreme outside for local horseman Robert Heathcote is Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival regular Hopfgarten second-up with Ronnie Stewart in the saddle.

Last time out the Mossman six-year-old ran second to Music Magnate in the Group 2 Victory Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm and he will be improving second-up at a track he has plenty of form at (16-4-3-0).

Other standouts include the returning Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Snippets Land and the Darren Beadman-trained Federal who is tracking towards the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) on June 10.
