2017 Australasian Oaks Winner: Egg Tart for Waller

Sydney’s best Chris Waller enjoyed his first Australasian Oaks win in Adelaide thanks to a brilliant late win by his up-and-coming filly Egg Tart at Morphettville.

The progressive daughter of Sebring came off four straight wins in much easier company, but was well-supported in betting for Saturday’s $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2010m).

Having her maiden black-type start, Egg Tart came off a nearly three length win over the Flemington mile on Anzac Day and relished her first look at further than 1600m in the Adelaide elite level.

Given a perfectly-timed ride by Kerrin McEvoy, the eventual Schweppes Oaks winner was settled well off the speed throughout with the field of three-year-old fillies led around by the roughie Tiffany’s Lass.

There was a late start to the day’s opening Group 1 after the scratching of Kiwi visitor Savvy Dreams, who flipped over in the barriers, and Ceylon also withdrawn at the gates.

As Tiffany’s Lass took up front running from the likes of Sebring Dream and Sword Of Light, all eyes were on the Darren Weir-trained favourite Kenedna who was settled right back by hoop John Allen.

Tracking Allen everywhere he went on the favourite, Kenedna coming off back-to-back wins at the track, was McEvoy on Egg Tart.

Tiffany’s Lass led into the turn, while Kenedna and Egg Tart were trying to get through with their runs.

Once in the clear, the top two in betting joined in and top honours went to the Waller filly who held off Kenedna.

The Stuart Webb-trained Ana Royale finished off the Australasian Oaks trifecta in third.

Options are now wide open for Egg Tart who could be Brisbane bound for a shot at the $500,000 Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm on June 3.

Waller also uncovered another 2017 Queensland Oaks hope at the Gold Coast on Saturday with Gold Coast Bracelet winner Dawn Wall heading towards the Group 1 her trainer took out with the mighty Winx back in 2015.
