Group 1 racing returns this weekend in the form of Robert Sangster Stakes Day in Adelaide and one of the features is the Australasian Oaks 2017, betting tips and updated odds on the classic for three-year-old fillies found below.
The $500,000 Group 1 Australasian Oaks (2010m) runs as the Schweppes Oaks on Saturday and heading the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.20 is the well-backed Darren Weir-trained Kenedna.
Drawn a treat in barrier three with John Allen retaining the ride, the Not A Single Doubt filly has won her past two on the trot at the Morphettville track in similar company including the smart effort from out wide in the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) on April 18.
That could prove the form line to follow into Saturday’s elite level as Weir chases his second Australasian Oaks success following his 2014 win with May’s Dream.
The last six Australasian Oaks winners jumped under $10 in betting and the other single figure hopes in the mix this year are the Chris Waller-trained Egg Tart ($4.20) chasing her fifth win on the trot and the Danny O’Brien-trained daughter of Toorak Toff Toffee Nose ($7.50).
Earlier we published our exclusive Australasian Oaks 2017 Form Guide & Preview, betting tips based on the facts and stats uncovered there detailed below.
Too many boxes ticked by the top fancy to ignore and happy to stick with the in-form Weir stable and his flying filly. Weir has won this race before and Kenedna has done everything right in the lead-up winning the two traditional Oaks preparatory races at the track. Five of the past 10 Australasian Oaks favourites saluted for the punters and after her big win in the Auraria Stakes from a nasty alley last time out, the better draw on Saturday suggests this filly can do the double for the first time since Grand Echezeaux (2000).
Big value odds on offer for the well-drawn Sedanzer, the Sebring filly in barrier four and coming off a credible fourth to Kenedna in the Auraria lead-up. She’s also up to these metres for the first time, but looks like she’ll see it out without a worry and has a good 43% win rate. Gai Waterhouse after a second success in the race and her first since Tempest Morn back in 2001.
Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra’s New Approach filly is in Adelaide and over further than a mile for the first time here, but she comes off back-to-back Caulfield wins and if the speed map plays out as slowly as the line-up suggests, she’ll be closing hard and is at an attractive price.
