A gun field of smart juveniles face off in the 2017 SA Breeders’ Stakes at Morphettville on the main track this Saturday in Adelaide, the bookies having a hard time separating the top chances in the Group 3 feature.
Set to kick off proceedings as Morphettville Race 1, this year’s $120,000 Group 3 southaustralia.com Breeders’ Stakes (1200m) originally drew 15 final acceptors but is down to 14 runners after the early scratching of Easy Beast (10).
Updated Breeders’ Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au are a tight affair with seven single-figure fancies and no clear favourite dominating the odds.
Currently heading the markets at $5 is Time Awaits drawn in barrier four with Damien Thornton to ride the Tony McEvoy-trained Nicconi filly.
Winner of Morphettville’s Listed Cinderella Stakes (1050m) two back, she was last seen racing at Flemington on March 18 when fourth to Shoals in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Breeders’ Stakes (1200m).
Time Awaits returns to Adelaide chasing her second win from as many starts at the track and with the right run from the good gate could prove the one to beat.
Hot on her heels are two equal $6.50 second elects with early market mover Redcore and Split Lip jumping from barriers five and one respectively.
Greg Eurell brings over his Cranbourne-trained Choisir gelding Redcore who steps up to stakes company for the first time after a brave second over 1100m at Caulfield in mid-April.
Locally Your Song filly Split Lip is trained by Will Clarken and comes into the Group 3 in flying form chasing her third win from as many starts.
Two back she scored an easy two length win over 1000m at Morphettville Parks before her narrow win at the main track on April 8 in the Listed Dequetteville Stakes (1050m) as a $13 shot.
This is another step-up in grade and distance, but the inside alley will help and she’s in the right form to get a clear run and finish off strong again.
Lightly-raced Broadband ($7.50) is another exciting young local hope out of the Dequetteville, the Phillip Stokes-trained Sebring filly out to improve on her third when only one and a half-lengths beaten by Split Lip last time out.
That was her second career start after the brave sixth on debut at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day behind Invincible Star in the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes (1000m).
The other key chances according to the markets shape-up as the Darren Weir-trained Artie Schiller filly Artstrum ($8.50), another Stokes-trained hope It’s A Myth ($8.50) who is a nicely-bred daughter of Sepoy on the improve and Lindsay Park’s Fastnet Rock colt Will’s Bid ($9.50) racing for the first time since his second last (13th) in the Group 1 Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes in late February.
