2017 Australasian Oaks Nominations Feature Kenedna

Darren Weir’s talented Auraria Stakes winner Kenedna is the headline filly among the Australasian Oaks 2017 nominations now out for next month’s Morphettville Group 1.

One of two elite level Adelaide Autumn Racing Carnival features held on May 6 for Robert Sangster Stakes Day, this season’s $500,000 Group 1 Schweppes Australasian Oaks (2000m) attracted 28 three-year-old fillies.

Heading the latest Australasian Oaks odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.50 to hand Weir with a second success after his win in 2014 with May’s Dream is the in-form Kenedna.

The daughter of Not A Single Doubt took out Flemington’s Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) in February before a third to Group 1 winner I Am A Star in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m) in March.

Weir brought her over to Adelaide early and she has won both her Morphettville assignments including the Group 3 Auraria Stakes (1800m) last weekend from a wide barrier 14 of 17 draw.

That race has proven the one to follow into the Australasian Stakes in recent years, however the double Kenedna is well-fancied to complete hasn’t been achieved since Grand Echezeaux (2000).

Kenedna is after the Auraria Stakes – Schweppes Oaks double last completed by Grand Echezeaux (2000)

The other best out of the traditional Oaks lead-up nominated for a rematch with Kenedna in the Group 1 are runner-up With A Bit Of Dash ($17) and Sebring Dream ($13).

Chris Bieg’s Dash For Cash filly With A Bit Of Dash is a perennial placegetter having finished second in five of her latest six starts including behind Kenedna in both the Laelia and Auraria Stakes this prep.

Sebring Dream meanwhile is one of three Lindsay Park-trained Schweppes Oaks nominations this season.

The stable’s head trainer David Hayes boasts an impressive record in the Australasian Oaks with three previous victories, most recently with Anamato in 2007.

Along with Sebring Dream his other hopes of adding to the tally are Domesticated ($21) and Harlow Gold ($11).

Best known for her second to Lasqueti Spirit in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) in Melbourne over the spring, Tavistock filly Harlow Gold was last seen running fourth to the Kiwi Bonneval in Randwick’s Group 1 ATC Oaks (2400m).

Prior to that she was third behind Montoya’s Secret in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m) at Rosehill and comes back to that distance for the Schweppes Oaks in South Australia.

Following Kenedna in all-in Australasian Oaks betting meanwhile are the consistent Chris Waller-trained Sebring filly Egg Tart ($5.50) and Danny O’Brien’s Melbourne visitor Toffee Nose ($5).

Egg Tart has won her past three on the trot including most recently a nearly three length effort over the Flemington mile on ANZAC Day in the wet and is tipped to appreciate the further metres of the Oaks.

Toffee Nose is a nicely-bred daughter of Toorak Toff who was last seen winning the VOBIS Gold Heath (2000m) at Caulfield on April 22 when taking on a field of well-performed colts and geldings.

Other key entries include the Matthew Ellerton-trained last start Caulfield winner over the mile Sword Of Light, NZ Oaks third placegetter Savvy Dreams and the local Leon MacDonald & Andrew Gluyas-trained Rebel Raider filly Pretty Punk.

The Australasian Oaks 2017 final field and barriers are out on May 2, 2017 so head to Ladbrokes.com.au now and back your early favourites at generous futures prices.
