Just 10 horses are engaged for this season’s $150,000 Group 3 Hall Mark Stakes (1200m), which is set to run as Randwick Race 4 at 1:50pm (AEST).

Leading the latest Hall Mark Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.10 and firming is the notable market mover Hellbent, backed in from an opening quote of $4.40, prepared by Victorian horseman Darren Weir.

The I Am Invincible stallion was originally also nominated for the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at weight-for-age on the card, but Weir opted for the sprint feature over the more suitable metres.

It shapes-up as an easier assignment for the four-year-old who was last seen running second Silent Sedition at Moonee Valley in the Group 1 William Reid Stakes (1200m) under 58.5kg.

He came devastatingly close to the elite level win that night and will enjoy coming back to 56kg and Group 3 company on the weekend in a very winnable race.

Second elect in the Hall Mark Stakes betting markets at $3.80 is Redzel for Peter & Paul Snowden who comes off two excellent runs.

The first was a second to last year’s All Aged Stakes winner English in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) on a Heavy (10) Randwick track before his second to stablemate Russian Revolution in the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) at Rosehill on Golden Slipper Day.

So will the top two in the markets be the first two past the post on Saturday or will there be an upset Hall Mark Stakes result from the likes of the returning Takedown ($6.50) or the rails-drawn Counterattack ($9.50)?

#8 Hellbent ($3.10)

Weir had him in the mix for the Group 1 and he nearly won a Group 1 over this distance in Melbourne last time out. This is more than winnable for him, especially considering the drop in class and weight. Doesn’t need to improve much on what he did last time to beat this field from a nice mid-field draw. Hasn’t been to Sydney for a year however, so just needs to get on the right leg.

#6 Federal ($10)

Good double-figure offering for this John O’Shea-trained five-year-old who is first-up and hasn’t raced since Group 3 third at Flemington during the Melbourne Cup Carnival. Two recent Randwick trials have brought him on and first-up record is strong (5-2-1-1). Handles a wet track, winning form at the track and looks overs in an open race to place.

#3 Redzel ($3.80)

Third-up this four-year-old for Team Snowden is a big danger. Has been excellent in some tough Sydney sprints leading up to this, including The Galaxy second when a neck off Russian Revolution. Yet to win over further than 1100mm but has plenty of Heavy track form (5-1-2-1). Hard to leave out.
