A capacity field of sixteen fillies will line up...
A field of end-of-season two-year-olds take to the Randwick track on Saturday afternoon for the Champagne Stakes 2017, betting tips and the latest odds on the mile showdown detailed below.
Set to run as Randwick Race 6 at 3:05pm (AEST), there are ten juveniles in the $500,000 Group 1 Moet & Chandon Champagne Stakes (1600m) field this All Aged Stakes Day.
Hot favourite in the Champagne Stakes odds online at Ladbrokes.com.au is Peter & Paul Snowden’s ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes winner Invader.
Drawn the rails with the dual winning jockey in the race Hugh Bowman to ride, consistent Snitzel colt Invader at $1.85 is now odds-on and the obvious pick.
Favourites in Champagne Stakes betting have an outstanding record in the race with five of the past six saluting and the inside alley further boosts Invader’s chances of adding to that this weekend.
Outside of the Group 1 winner the other single-figure fancy getting early love from the punters is Whispered Secret ($5) on the quick seven day back-up.
Trainer James Cummings took out the Fernhill Handicap – Champagne Stakes double last autumn with Prized Icon and is out to do the same this season with his progressive High Chaparral filly Whispered Secret.
She took out the Fernhill over the Randwick mile by a nice margin last Saturday and now she takes on the boys stepping right up in grade for the Group 1 on the final major meeting of the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival.
So will the top two in betting get the job done for the punters or is there an upset Champagne Stakes result pending from the likes of Paul Perry’s Group 3 winning Choisir colt The Mission ($9), the Lindsay Park-trained Mornington Sires’ winner Eshtiraak ($11) or Sweet Embrace Stakes winning filly One More Honey ($11)?
#1 Invader ($1.85)
Really hard to go past the deserving favourite event at the odds of under $2. Co-trainer Peter Snowden has prepared three winners in the past seven years, most recently Guelph (2013) who completed the ATC Sires’ – Champagne Stakes double that Invader is after this season. The Sires’ Produce form has stacked up more than any other race in the mile showdown and this smart colt should see out the extra distance no worries based on his impressive win a fortnight ago.
#8 Whispered Secret ($5)
Think the bookies have the order of the odds right with this nice filly backing up from the strong win over the same track and distance a week ago. The fillies have won three of the past four editions of the Champagne Stakes, and trainer James Cummings won the Group 1 last year with his Fernhill Handicap winner Prized Icon. Money is coming for this up-and-comer so if you’re tipping the upset, now is the time to get behind her.
#3 Eshtiraak ($11)
Eshtriraak has won four of his past five starts progressing through the ranks quickly, the Street Cry colt coming off the Mornington Sires’ win over 15000m late last month. He should run an extra 100m and he’s the unknown danger.
