After Winx wins the 2017 Queen Elizabeth Stakes making it seventeen on the trot this afternoon in Sydney only triple Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva will sit higher than Chris Waller’s mare in the all-time prize money earners’ list.
Makybe Diva retired after 36 career starts with $14,526,685 in prize money, a figure the current world’s best Winx is fast approaching.
The daughter of Street Cry has had 26 starts so far for 20 wins and three seconds, including eleven Group 1 victories headlined by back-to-back Cox Plate victories in 2015 and 2016.
This afternoon Winx is out to extend a winning streak that goes back 24 months to seventeen straight jumping the odds-on favourite at Ladbrokes.com.au in the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m).
There is absolutely nothing to suggest she won’t win as the superstar faces just the eight rivals at her pet track and distance on a Heavy-rated track, which she has showed she can handle no worries.
Currently Winx has amassed $10,438,930 in prize money, a champion effort by a champion mare who cost connections $230,000 at the Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale back in 2013.
She was an unassuming filly to look at and far from what some would call “the perfect racehorse” according to part-owner Peter Tighe.
“When we bought her she had the athletic attributes of a greyhound,” Tighe told The Sydney Morning Herald this week.
“She was long and thin. [But] it’s not about buying the absolute perfect horse on the day.”
That is a massive return for the Magic Bloodstock crew and the fairy tale isn’t over yet.
This afternoon Winx will take home $2.34 million as the Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner, pushing her total prize money earned up to an incredible $12,778,930.
That will see her surpass the current second-highest earner Sunline ($11,352,670) who, like Winx, enjoyed back-to-back Cox Plate wins (1999 & 2000) during a glittering career on the turf.
There is a certain level of nervous energy every time Winx takes to the track with expectations growing each time she races and wins.
Waller though knows he has the mare going as good as ever and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes has always been the autumn grand final target.
“It’s been a long preparation but everything has gone to plan, a little bit like a child waiting for Christmas,” he told News Corp.
“This is the race we’ve been building towards since she won the Cox Plate in the spring.
“Obviously she’s in great form but she needs to win again.”
