Property wins Kindergarten Stakes

Victorian two year old Property lived up to his early juvenile form by producing a dominant win in the Group 3 $200,000 Widden 150th Anniversary Stakes (formerly the Kindergarten Stakes) (1100m) at Randwick on day one of ‘The Championships’ today.

The Robert Smerdon trained Property won both his lead up races to the Group 1 $1.5m Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 25 but missed a place when fifth to Catchy in the main event.

Today’s race was Property’s first time back to the race track since the Ladbrokes Blue Diamond Stakes and Smerdon said it was no surprise to see him racing away at the finish to score a comfortable win.

“He is a horse of high talent from day one and as has been documented he trialled up, not officially, in jump outs at Caulfield and with all the competition you have there in the jump outs you know how good they are and he was above them all,” Smerdon said.

Property was supposed to be heading to Hong Kong to race but ended up staying at Smerdon’s Caulfield stable after he had some issues with his xrays.

“He was sold to Hong Kong, I don’t know what the figure was but it was pretty substantial, but he had some x-ray issues,” Smerdon said.

“They are very very strict on what goes there so there was no options but to send him to the races.”

“He has had a long testing preparation. He had four jump outs before he ever went to the races sand then he had a Blue Diamond prep. He had a breather at the stables, he has a three year old build and mentality about him so we just soldiered on and to see what we can do and we have ended up here.”

In a fairly open betting race Property, with Hugh Bowman in the saddle, started at the good odds of $4.80 and was able to beat Condor Heroes ($4.80) by three and a quarter lengths with $4.60 favourite Sheikha a further one and a quarter lengths away in third spot while the leader From Within ($6) faded in the straight to finish fourth.
