It is shaping-up as a wide open edition of the $3 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile Handicap (1600m) this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival, but just four of the runners in the capacity field are under double-figures for the win.

In the past seven years just the one Doncaster Mile winner has saluted at double-figures with Sacred Falls winning his first of two in 2013 as a $21 roughie on Heavy going.

He won again in 2014 on a Heavy (9) track for Chris Waller who went on to celebrate four Doncaster Mile wins on the trot, and his sixth overall, with Kermadec (2015) and Winx (2016).

This year the Waller-trained runners in the Doncaster Mile field are all over $10 for the win in markets at Ladbrokes.com.au that are led by proven mudlark Le Romain ($5.50).

The Randwick track is set to be in the Heavy ratings for Day 1 of ‘The Championships’ and that looks to work firmly in the favour of favourite Le Romain prepared by Newcastle’s Kris Lees.

The four-year-old son of Hard Spun has killer form in the wet with two wins and two seconds from four goes on the going including the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) win on March 4.

He comes off a second to Winx in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill and will relish the return to Randwick where he has enjoyed four wins and three seconds from eight starts.

The biggest danger out to stop Le Romain from winning for the punters is the market mover Redkirk Warrior ($11 into $7.50) who comes off an unconventional lead-up.

Lindsay Park’s Hong Kong expat was last seen winning Flemington’s Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m), but the team have always had the Doncaster Mile in mind.

He could be found at $31 odds for the Melbourne win first-up, but is much shorter in Doncaster Mile betting out to be the first winner of the race to come off a Flemington lead-up in over 30 years.

The others being kept safe in the Doncaster Mile odds include last start Group 3 winner who ran second to Winx in this race last season Happy Clapper ($8) and Darren Weir’s last start Blamey Stakes winning stallion Palentino ($9.50).

Our 2017 Doncaster Mile Trifecta Tip is #2 Le Romain from #15 Hey Doc and #10 Redkirk Warrior

1st

#2 Le Romain ($5.50)

Favourites have a decent Doncaster Mile record in the past 10 years and there’s too much to like about this year’s top fancy to bet against. The wet track is key to this race and Le Romain is the best in the going. The George Ryder has produced the past three Doncaster winners and this galloper was second best behind the world’s best in that last time out. Hugh Bowman won the race last year and is back aboard this year’s favourite who has the Heavy track record (4-2-2-0), form at 1600m (3-2-0-0) and the 88% Place Rate plus Randwick strike rate (8-4-3-0) to beat.

2nd

#15 Hey Doc ($16)

Nice odds offered on this widely-drawn youngster out to add to the good record of three-year-olds in the Doncaster Mile. Kermadec (2015) was the last 3YO to win and he did it from out in barrier 16 of 20. Hey Doc is out in 19 (into 17) so has similar work to do off back-to-back Flemington wins. He took out the Australian Guineas over this distance last start against his own age and is up against the older horses back from 56.5kg to 52kg. 50% win rate and loves the mile (4-2-0-1). Can he go the Sydney way?

3rd

#10 Redkirk Warrior ($7.50)

Money is in for the Newmarket Handicap winner who opened at double-figures before being smashed by the punters. He’s now the second best in betting to handle the notable rise in distance. Has winning form overseas up to 2020m however and took out the Group 3 Sandown Stakes (1500m) in Melbourne during the spring, so the distance isn’t an issue. He’s weighted to win on 53kg even with the 2kg penalty and is a really interesting addition to the race.
