The Australian Derby 2017 betting markets for Saturday are all about the Kiwi Gingernuts to continue his gun run, but below are our full exotic selections and best bets on the Royal Randwick clash.
We’re in for a wet edition of Doncaster Mile Day this weekend with another Heavy-rated track at Randwick Racecourse for Day 1 of ‘The Championships’.
One of the key events on the bumper ten-race card is the $2 million Group 1 Australian Derby (2400m) featuring a line-up of thirteen keen young stayers.
The Australian Derby odds at Ladbrokes.com.au firmly favour the Stephen Autrdige & Jamie Richards-trained NZ Derby champ Gingernuts.
The in-form Iffraaj gelding franked the Kiwi form in his Australian debut on March 18 winning the Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2100m) on a Heavy (10) track by over two lengths.
The money is coming again for him to hold out a similar line-up of runners including the Rosehill Guineas runner-up Inference and third placed So Si Bon with Gingernuts at $3.10 and firming in ATC Derby betting.
So will the favourite get the job done for the punters in the ATC Derby for the first time in three years or will the winning streak end with the likes of fellow New Zealander Jon Snow ($7) and Alister Clark Stakes winner Hardham ($16) boasting genuine claims?
Earlier we published our comprehensive 2017 ATC Derby Form Guide & Preview and based on the facts uncovered we’ve got the top tips on the race.
If Gingernuts brings the same form to the track he did last time out, there’s nothing there to stop him from extending the winning streak to five on the trot. Gets back up to a mile and a half, which he won the NZ Derby over two back, and was far too good in the Rosehill Guineas. The double was last done by Criterion (2014) and that form line is the one to follow into the ATC Derby. Opie Bosson has ridden an Australian Derby winner before, Kiwi horses have a gun record in this race in the past decade, this horse swims in the mud and has the best Win Rate (63%) of the field.
If you like the Kiwis, then back Jon Snow for another place. He was third in the NZ Derby two back before travelling to Sydney and winning last weekend’s Tulloch Stakes over 2000m on a Heavy (9) at Rosehill. Did that by nearly three lengths and will eat-up the extra distance on Saturday on the quick back-up. Firing fit and trainer Murray Baker has prepared three past ATC Derby winners so knows exactly what it takes. The Tulloch Stakes – ATC Derby double hasn’t been done since Starcraft (2004), but this horse goes on a Heavy course and can finish in the money.
Thought we’d uncovered some value, but then saw the bookies were keeping this galloper safe in betting. Co-trainer Trent Busuttin won the race twelve months ago and his chance in 2017 is drawn barrier one, which has produced the past three Derby champs. Hugh Bowman rides after his second win after success on Criterion (2014) and this horse wasn’t disgraced running fourth in the Rosehill Guineas.
