A smart field of three-year-old fillies will take to the Moonee Valley track this evening in one of the major support acts on the William Reid Stakes Night card – the Alexandra Stakes 2017.
Due to run as Race 5 at 8:30pm (AEDT), this season’s $150,000 Group 3 Alexandra Stakes (1600m) is down to eleven starters after the early scratching of Montoya’s Secret (11).
Heading the latest Alexandra Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $3.30 and firming is the perennial runner-up Ellicazoom from WA.
Neville Parnham’s ultra-consistent daughter of Testa Rossa comes off five straight second placings and she’s out to go one better for the punters tonight.
She has had two Melbourne runs this time in and has been narrowly beaten in both just a nostril flare off Savanna Amour in the Group 2 Angus Armanasco Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield and then I Am A Star in the Group 2 Kewney Stakes (1400m).
Getting back up to a mile she’ll be well-suited having crossed second in both the Group 3 WA Champion Fillies race and the Group 2 WA Guineas over the 1600m back home last November.
Two other fillies follow closely in Alexandra Stakes betting with market mover Peninsula Links ($4.40) chasing a third win on the trot and Oregon’s Day ($4.50) out to atone for her eighth in the Kewney Stakes.
Drawn in barrier three, Daniel Clarken’s Magnus filly races outside of Adelaide for the first time and boasts an ultra-consistent record of four wins and three seconds from her eight career runs to date.
She has winning form up to a mile and is well-supported to step up in class for her first black-type assignment in the Alexandra Stakes.
The Mick Price-trained Oregon’s Day is drawn one closer to the inside in barrier two with Mark Zahra retaining the ride on the daughter of Domesday.
She ran second in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m) and third in the Angus Armanasco before things went amiss in the Kewney where she bombed the start.
If she gets away smoothly she’ll be in the mix again.
Toffee Nose ($6.50) rounds out the single-figure fancies, the Danny O’Brien-trained daughter of Toorak Toff back in Group company for the first time since her brave fourth in the Group 2 Wakeful Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on Derby Day as a $91 roughie.
Of the longer-priced fillies in the mix those with genuine claims for an upset Alexandra Stakes result shape-up as Lindsay Park’s Group 1 performed Sebring Dream ($10), the rails-drawn Fragonard ($14) for the Godolphin stable and the Darren Weir-trained Mrs Gardenia ($15) coming off back-to-back wins in easier company.
