John Thompson’s last start Randwick winner in the mud Astronomos leads Neville Sellwood Stakes 2017 betting to get through the Heavy going again in Sydney on Saturday.
The New Approach six-year-old is one of nine gallopers taking to the Rosehill track in Race 3 at 1:35pm (AEDT) on The BMW Day in the $150,000 Group 3 The Daily Telegraph Neville Sellwood Stakes (2000m).
Drawn the rails in barrier one with Jason Collett to ride on 55kg, Astronomos rises from the 53.5kg that he carried to a black-type win over the same distance on a Heavy (10) track on March 4.
He runs at Rosehill for the first time since December of 2014, but will prove hard to beat if the track is saturated as he boasts four wins from five previous starts on Heavy going.
Astronomos pays a short $2.70 in the latest Neville Sellwood Stakes odds at Ladbrokes.com.au and looks to have enough improvement to win again in the mud.
His biggest dangers in Neville Sellwood Stakes betting are Floodlight ($4.80) and early market mover Zasorceress ($5).
John O’Shea trains Godolphin import Floodlight, the four-year-old Medaglia D’Oro stallion having just his second run down under on Saturday.
His debut in Australia produced an eighth in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill a fortnight back when beaten under three lengths in a brave effort.
He will appreciate the step-up in distance second-up and has genuine claims.
Zasorceress jumps from gate eight carrying 53kg in the form of Damian Lane, the Darren Weir-trained Zabeel mare having her first Sydney start since April last year.
She was last seen running a close second to Circular at Flemington in the Group 3 Matron Stakes (1600m) over the mile and has winning form up to 1800m.
Also under $10 for the win are the Gary Moore-trained local Al Maher four-year-old Classic Uniform ($8.50) and Ambience ($8.50) who is the other O’Shea-trained runner in the race.
Tim Clark rides Classic Uniform on Saturday, the galloper returning to Rosehill after winning the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) at the track two back.
His last start was a close fourth behind Dark Eyes at the start of the month in the Listed Canberra Cup (2000m).
Ambience jumps from gate two with former Melbourne Cup winning hoop Corey Brown aboard the four-year-old daughter of Street Cry.
Runner-up in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2400m) last winter in Brisbane, Ambience ran well in the mud on Golden Slipper Day in the Group 3 Epona Stakes (1900m) and is on the quick back-up into the Neville Sellwood Stakes field this weekend.
