Derryn handles heavy track to win Darby Munro Stakes

Victorian three year old Derryn handled the heavy Rosehill track to perfection to score a comfortable win in the Listed $125,000 Quickway Constructions Darby Munro Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill today.

Lindsay Park Co-trainer David Hayes said that that Derryn would now be aimed towards the Group 2 $600,000 Arrowfield 3yo Sprint (1200m) at Randwick on April 8, day two of ‘The Championships’.

“I loved the way that he got on the bit and rounded them up,” Hayes said.

“From the 600m I though he had them covered. For a second coming from last I thought he might have got there a fraction early but the margin was a length and a half so Regan got it right.”

“He will head towards the Arrowfield now, it is a good colt’s race over the Carnival and if it rains we’ll dance.”

In-form jockey Regan Bayliss settled Derryn ($8.50) near the tail of the field and angled to the outside in the straight for a clear run to the line to record a one and three quarter lengths win over the Team Hawkes trained Crafty Cop ($8.50) with the $2.90 favourite Tactical Advantage a further half a length away in third position.

Glyn Schofield positioned Tactical Advantage just behind the leading division but the favourite didn’t appear to be comfortable in the heavy conditions and struggled to stretch out in the straight.
