Hartnell heads a small field for Saturday’s Ranvet Stakes 2017, but does the John O’Shea-trained galloper get the job done at his short price in betting?
The multiple Group 1 winning import faces just seven rivals in the $700,000 Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) on Golden Slipper Stakes Day and gets his first run in 2017 in a Winx-less field.
Drawn in barrier six, Hartnell dominates Ranvet Stakes betting at Ladbrokes.com.au paying $2 for the win third-up with English hoop William Buick riding.
The biggest dangers looking at the Ranvet Stakes odds are reigning champion The United States ($5) and Chris Waller’s Sydney Cup-bound Antonio Giuseppe ($9).
Earlier we published our detailed 2017 Ranvet Stakes Form Guide & Betting Preview and based on that we have the horses to back and sack in Saturday’s weight-for-age showdown.
#7 Antonio Giuseppe ($9)
Waller’s ultra-consistent four-year-old is a son of Melbourne Cup winner Shocking and he’s building up a very good record. He really looks to love the Rosehill track (5-4-1-0) and races her for the third time on the trot. Won carting 59kg first-up before the second in the Sky High last Saturday. The winner Tavago bolted home, but Antonio Giuseppe gets the chance to atone here on the quick back-up. Back to WFA and 59kg, but it is a small field and the stats stack up. Four of the past five Ranvet Stakes winners ran top two in the lead-up and this galloper is the only one coming off that form line this year. Best Win & Place rates of the field and is undefeated on Heavy going (2-2-0-0) so he’ll swim if it is wet.
#1 Hartnell ($2)
Can Hartnell finally get his first win on the board for 2017? There is no Winx to stop him this time and he should be nearing peak fitness third-up. Was disappointing for eighth in the Chipping Norton Stakes last time out and is out to regain confidence. Turnbull Stakes winner over these metres by over three lengths defeating Jameka last October at Flemington, his overall record at the distance very good (9-4-1-1). Rosehill holds no fears (2-2-0-0), proven at WFA and goes okay in the wet (4-1-1-1).
#5 The United States ($5)
Defending Ranvet Stakes winner out to go back-to-back in the race for the first time since Theseo (2009-10). Ben Melham stays aboard the stallion third-up on the back of a fifth when just over two lengths beaten last weekend in Melbourne’s Australian Cup (2000m). In Sydney for the first time since last autumn when he took out this race then ran second in the Queen Elizabeth. Ticks plenty of boxes again for a top three run.
