Inference Heads 2017 Rosehill Guineas Nominations

The Hawkes Racing-trained Inference is one of the key Rosehill Guineas 2017 nominations taken for the three-years-old Group 1 at Rosehill on Golden Slipper Stakes Day this weekend in Sydney.

Racing NSW took nineteen early entries for this season’s $600,000 Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m), the set weights clash one of five elite levels on the Rosehill Gardens card on Saturday.

Co-trainer John Hawkes has prepared three previous Rosehill Guineas winners – Octagonal (1996), Sale Of Century (2001) and Niello (2004) – and looks to have a stand-out chance of a fourth win with nicely bred So You Think colt Inference in 2017.

Inference has won four of his nine career starts to date, most recently beating the filly Invincible Gem home in the mud on March 4 to take out the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m).

He handled the Heavy (10) track that day and also ran third to Prized Icon in the Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m) at Flemington during the spring, suggesting the 2000m of the Rosehill Guineas third-up should be ideal.

Currently Inference sits top of pre-field Rosehill Guineas odds at paying $4.50 to complete the double last achieved by It’s A Dundeel (2013).

The other best out of the Randwick Guineas nominated for a rematch over more distance this weekend is the third-placed Comin’ Through for Chris Waller.

There has been plenty of hype this autumn on the half-brother of Criterion who won the Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes (1600m) at Flemington in the spring.

He has had three runs this time in for three losses, most recently running two lengths third in the Randwick Guineas and currently pays $8.50 to atone with a Group 1 win on Saturday.

Waller chases his first Rosehill Guineas win in 2017 and has also nominated for Wine Bush and the flying Snitzel colt Sizzling Bullet who comes off back-to-back Randwick wins over 1800m and 200m respectively this season.

Second favourite in all-in Rosehill Guineas betting behind Inference is the reigning Victoria Derby winner Prized Icon ($5.50).

The More Than Ready colt comes off a Melbourne lead-up run having crossed a solid second behind Hey Doc in the Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) a fortnight ago.

The Australian Guineas produced last year’s Rosehill Guineas winner Tarzino (2nd in 2016), form Prized Icon is out to frank this weekend as he prepares to excel over the extra metres three runs into this autumn campaign.

Also in top form heading towards the Group 1 on Saturday is Kiwi raider Gingernuts looking to join the growing list of recent New Zealanders to win the Rosehill Guineas.

Jimmy Choux (2011), It’s A Dundeel (2013) and Volkstok’n’barrell (2015) are the latest NZ visitors to get the job done and the bookies are taking no chances with the Stephen Autridge & Jamie Richards-trained Gingernuts this season.

He has won four from seven at home to date including the Group 1 NZ Derby (2400m) on March 4 from barrier 13 of 18, ideal form heading down under for the first time on Golden Slipper Day.

Jimmy Choux (2011) completed the NZ Derby – Rosehill Guineas double that Gingernuts shoots for this season.
