2017 Coolmore Classic Results: Heavens Above In Upset

Tim Martin’s underrated mare Heavens Above enjoyed an upset win in the Coolmore Classic 2017 breaking a nine-year Group 1 winning drought for her trainer.

Typhoon Zed winning The Galaxy in 2008 was Martin’s last Group 1 victory and at Rosehill Gardens this weekend his Street Cry mare Heavens Above was only rated a $20 chance in the $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m).

The diminutive five-year-old showed she had a mighty little engine underneath her small frame however and was given a gun ride by jockey Tye Angland – who also rode Alverta to victory in the race back in 2010.

“She’s a gutsy little filly,” winning hoop Angland said.

“She’s little but she’s got a big heart.

“She had to make up a lot of ground and she let down super strong.

“It was a gutsy win.”

It was a terrific three-way finish in the Coolmore Classic this autumn with Heavens Above only putting herself into the picture late having wound-up down the outside after an off-the-pace ride.

In the end she narrowly beat home the super consistent last-start Mannerism Stakes winner Silent Sedition (2nd) and the Kris Lees-trained Danish Twist (3rd) in the Coolmore Classic trifecta.

Gai Waterhouse’s dual Group 1 winning filly Global Glamour pushed forward after the jump to lead the field around, while Daysee Doom for last year’s winning trainer Ron Quinton tracked second before eventually crossing fourth over the line.

Andrew Noblet’s Victorian raider Silent Sedition was brave for her second place finish after racing deep out in third throughout, hitting the front briefly 200m out before Heavens Above and Danish Twist came with their runs.

The favourite Omei Sword was never in it, settled second last in running and never making up enough ground to challenge.

Post-race the Chris Waller-trained filly was found to have bled from both nostrils and would be banned from racing for three months.

Martin confirmed plans were to now head towards a Royal Randwick run on Day 1 of ‘The Championships’, April 1, in the $3 million Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).

“We’ll just wait and see, but she’ll go to the Doncaster most likely,” he said.
