2017 Coolmore Classic Day Results: Heavens Above Wins The Feature

2017 Coolmore Classic Day has drawn some of the Autumn Carnival’s most exciting horses to Rosehill Gardens this afternoon and seven of the nine races will be contested at black type level.

Races.com.au will be covering the 2017 Coolmore Classic Day results as they happen this afternoon and we are set for an entertaining day of racing.

2017 Coolmore Classic Day will officially get underway with the running of the Schweppes Handicap (1350m) at 12:30pm local time and will conclude after the TAB.com.au Handicap (1900m) is contested at 5:40pm.

Race 1 (12:30pm) Schweppes Handicap Results

Godolphin import Spectroscope has completed a smart performance to win the Schweppes Handicap at Rosehill this afternoon.

Spectroscope jumped from the gates well, but was settled off the early pace by jockey William Buick as Voilier and Fly Forward set a healthy early tempo for the small field.

The Medaglia D’Oro entire found a clear line upon arriving at the final straight and easily put his rivals away; making it one win from as many starts in Australia.

Artistry has produced an impressive late sprint to win the Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes.

Punters favoured Artistry’s stable mate Dothraki in the hours leading up to jump, but the talented mare’s fresh form proved superior when she mustered a strong turn of foot with 200m to run to find the line a half-length in the clear.

Fickle Folly worked home well to finish third, while pacesetter Ball Of Muscle faded late to finish fourth.

Race 3 (1:45pm) Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes Results

Single Bullet has confirmed a position in the Golden Slipper field after beating fierce rival Ducimus in the Group 2 Pago Pago Stakes this afternoon.

Single Bullet and Ducimus immediately took up the pace after jumping well and the Pago Pago Stakes always appeared a race of two horses.

Kicking clear of their rivals upon arriving at the final straight, the two two-year-olds traded blows right up the Rosehill Gardens straight but it was Single Bullet who pulled slightly ahead as they found the line.

  • 3rd – Coruscate

Tulip has gained ballot-free entry into the Golden Slipper with a strong win in the Group 2 Magic Night Stakes (1200m) this afternoon.

Jockey Kerrin McEvoy took a positive position on the heels of the race’s early leaders with Tulip this afternoon, but the pair were caught slightly wider than anticipated across the back straight.

Offered a clear line upon arriving at the final straight, the Pierro filly allowed Godolphin runner Alizee a good start, but sped home late to find the line a length in the clear.

Race 5 (3:00pm) Group 3 Sky High Stakes Results

Prominent stayer Tavago has stormed home to record a comfortable win in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes and stamp himself as a serious contender for the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) in a fortnight.

Tavago was settled off the early breakneck pace set by Red Excitement and was held on the rails leading into he final straight, as his rivals headed for the middle of the track.

Immediately responding when asked for an extra effort, the Tavistock gelding stormed clear to find the line several lengths ahead of a tiring Antonio Giuseppe and a fast-finishing Allergic.

Foxplay has overcome a horror run in transit to be crowned the 2017 Phar Lap Stakes winner this afternoon.

The Foxwedge filly was caught at the tail of the field in transit and was faced with a line of horses when she straightened, but was able to weave through the field before mustering a signature late turn of foot to find the line a half-length ahead of Zenalicious.

Comic Set worked to the line well to finish third, while Country Championships contender Pumpkin Pie was impressive to the line to finish fourth.

Race 7 (4:15pm) Group 1 Coolmore Classic Results

Heavens Above broke a nine-year Group 1 drought for Tim Martin to become the 2017 Coolmore Classic winner in Sydney today.

The class mare was underrated going into the race second-up, but dug deep late with a barnstorming run down the outside to score a narrow victory over Silent Sedition and Danish Twist.

Martin is keen to back her up at Randwick during ‘The Championships’ in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m).

Race 8 (5:00pm) Group 2 Ajax Stakes Results

It’s Somewhat has successfully defended his crown in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) this afternoon; delivering Godolphin another valuable black type win.

It’s Somewhat settled midfield after jumping well in the Ajax Stakes and settled into a good rhythm as Testashadow and Singing set the early pace.

Hugging the rails rounding into the final straight, the Dynaformer gelding steadily worked his way to the pace and managed to bob clear on the line to beat New Tipperary and Testashadow.

  • 3rd – Testashadow

Race 9 (5:40pm) TAB.com.au Handicap Results

Hogmanay has held on to win the final race at Rosehill Gardens on 2017 Coolmore Classic Day.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding flew the barriers and set a fair tempo from the outset, and made his clear racing line count in the final straight when he sustained a strong-enough sprint to the line to beat Green Sweet.

Hunter Jack faded late, but held on to beat a fast-finishing Doc Holliday, who contested the race first-up.

  • 3rd – Hunter Jack
