One of the early Coolmore Classic Day features at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday sees the always-honest Dothraki start favourite in the Maurice McCarten Stakes 2017 field and betting markets.
Due to jump as Rosehill Race 2 at 1:10pm (AEDT), this season’s $150,000 Group 3 Maurice McCarten Stakes (1100m) has drawn a diminutive final field of seven sprinters.
The Mossman six-year-old has run fourth in both lead-up races this campaign and takes to the Rosehill track under race conditions for the first time since his third in last autumn’s Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m).
Dothraki hasn’t won since October of 2015, but caught the eye in January running under two lengths fourth in the $1 million Magic Millions Sprint (1200m) on the Gold Coast.
He was also good in mid-February when fourth, this time only a length off the winner Le Romain in the Group 3 Southern Cross Stakes (1200m).
Le Romain franked that form next-up winning last weekend’s Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) in the wet at Royal Randwick, which bodes well for Dothraki heading into his run this Saturday.
Close second elect in the Maurice McCarten Stakes betting markets at $3.70 is the Joe Pride-trained Ball Of Muscle out to improve on his ninth to English in the Group 2 Challenge Stakes (1000m) last Saturday.
The six-year-old Dubawi gelding has plenty of nice form over 1100m (5-2-2-0) and is out to atone after finishing last on a Heavy (10) Randwick track in the Challenge Stakes.
He is on the short seven day turnaround, but will be better suited to the easier grade of rivals on Saturday and hopefully sees firmer ground chasing his first win since May of 2015.
Also under double-figures are the returning Artistry ($4) for Team Snowden and fellow female galloper Zelady’s Night Out ($8.50).
Five-year-old Shamardal mare Artistry is a Rosehill specialist boasting three wins from four starts at the track she races at for the first time since her Group 3 Newcastle Newmarket Handicap (1350m) win last March.
She also won her latest run at Flemington back on Melbourne Cup Day in the spring in Group 3 company and trialled well at Rosehill over 1000m in late January leading up to her return.
Zelady’s Night Out is also first-up on Saturday, Peter Robl’s consistent Myboycharlie filly having won three of her six career starts to date.
She hasn’t raced since August last year where she failed to impress during a two run Sydney autumn campaign, but has had two good trials including a Rosehill win by nearly five lengths on February 14 ahead of Saturday.
