Waller Dominates 2017 Sydney Cup First Acceptances

Sydney’s leading trainer Chris Waller looks the horseman to beat in this Sydney Cup 2017 with three of his runners leading betting on the two mile classic following first acceptances.

This week Racing NSW took first declarations for all the key Royal Randwick races run on April 1 and April 8 during ‘The Championships’, including those for the $2 million Group 1 Schweppes Sydney Cup (3200m) on Day 2.

Sydney Cup first acceptances have cut the number of hopeful stayers heading into the classic to 43 including five for Waller who is after his third win after earlier victories with Stand To Gain (2011) and Grand Marshal (2015).

Three of the Waller-trained contingent occupy the first three lines of futures Sydney Cup betting at Ladbrokes.com.au including the $6 favourite Antonio Guiseppe.

An ultra-consistent son of Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, the four-year-old ran second in last year’s Group 1 The Metropolitan (2400m) at Randwick and resumed in the autumn with a first-up victory at Rosehill.

He is set to race again this weekend at Rosehill in the Sky High Stakes and currently gets into the Sydney Cup weights on just 52.5kg.

Waller’s other two top fancies at $8 each for the win are the imported Kinema (50.5kg) and last year’s runner-up behind Gallante in the Sydney Cup quinella Libran (55kg).

Libran has had two autumn runs for two well-beaten efforts behind superstar stablemate Winx, but will be better over more metres later this prep including Saturday’s $350,000 Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m).

Waller’s other first acceptors are the 2015 champion Grand Marshal and the always-honest eight-year-old Who Shot Thebarman.

Veteran Yamanin Vital gelding Who Shot Thebarman continues to race consistently including the surprise third as a $101 roughie behind Winx in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) first-up.

He has run in the past three editions of the Sydney Cup improving on a ninth in 2014 when runner-up in 2015 and fourth in last year’s race.

Heading the Sydney Cup 2017 weights and updated order of entry with 57kg is the Lee & Anthony Freedman-trained Our Ivanhowe, followed by the aforementioned Waller-trained duo of Grand Marshal (55.5kg) and Who Shot Thebarman (55.5kg).

English horseman Charlie Appleby is still in with two potential international Sydney Cup raiders: dour stayer Penglai Pavilion who has winning form up to 4220m and Echo Of Light gelding Polarisation.

Other notable first acceptors include last year’s ATC Derby winner Tavago who beat home subsequent Caulfield Cup winner Jameka in that 2400m showdown and Big Duke for Darren Weir.

Raven’s Pass five-year-old Big Duke is only lightly raced having won four of his 10 career start to date and was last seen taking out the Group 3 Launceston Cup (2400m) in Tasmania.

Weir’s other two entries are last start Lord Reims Stakes winner in Adelaide Master Of Arts and Lord Van Percy.

Check out the full first acceptances below, the Sydney Cup 2017 field set for release on Tuesday April 4.
