The 2017 Australian Guineas steals the show in Melbourne on Saturday at Flemington Racecourse, betting tips and the latest odds on the three-years-old mile clash detailed below.
A bumper field of 16 will face off in this autumn’s $750,000 Group 1 Australian Guineas (1600m) with the rain in Sydney scaring off potential runners in the Randwick Guineas over the same distance on the same day.
Heading the Australian Guineas odds at Ladbrokes.com.au at $3.30 and firming is the Tony McEvoy-trained Duporth gelding Hey Doc coming off the Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes (1400m) win at the track a fortnight back.
The dangers out to stop Hey Doc from completing the double for the first time since Wandjina (2015) include the spring’s Caulfield Guineas winner Divine Prophet ($9.50) and the Lindsay Park-trained filly Fuhryk ($14) coming off the Kevin Hayes Stakes victory.
Earlier in the week we published our Ladbrokes Exclusive 2017 Australian Guineas Form Guide & Betting Preview and based on the facts and stats uncovered, below are our tips to back and sack in the race.
Going for the value in the race and love the form around this Lindsay Park-trained Sebring colt. The stable is flying and this horse gets the chance to atone for a disappointing first-up 10th in the CS Hayes. Was beaten around five lengths but will improve over a mile with the Emirates Stakes (2000m) second from the spring at Flemington. Has last year’s winning hoop Mark Zahra in the saddle and is a livewire chance to surprise in an open race.
Plenty of boxes ticked by the favourite and he is a must include. CS Hayes Stakes win was strong and that form looks solid heading into the Group 1. Only concern is the barrier could see him shuffled back, but he gets the chance to box seat and has a nice finishing burst. Five horses have done the double he chases on Saturday, was impressive last time out will be improving more. Favourites don’t have a great record and he is out to be the first since Light Fantastic (2008) to salute.
Fillies don’t have a great record in the race but this Crown Oaks runner-up will be in fine form second-up off a good third in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m) here a fortnight ago. Winning form over a mile on her record, she’s got class and looks in for big things this season. Gate suits and she’ll be right in the finish.
